"... Most insidiously, we have each created a fictitious projection of our selves, a self-representation, and gotten lost within it, pursuing its interests to the detriment of our true interests ..."before spacing all the way out there with Raw Story's posting of The List.
"... At least 21 of the 25 were financed by banks that received US government bailout money, and 11 of them have made hefty payments to settle prosecution claims of widespread lending abuses, it said. ..."Those two works alone should set you up for some heavy introspection during which you'll flash on what you saw on TV recently or read about somewhere else and weren't completely sure how that sound bite might fit into a larger picture.
And then we have little Bristol Palin, teen mom, preaching abstinence, like used pink ribbon tying the whole package together that between you and me, is no gift. It is unmanaged overpopulation exploding like runaway inflation. From there, its a very short step to the Santa Barbara wildfire (origin unknown at this posting, but you can guess) and an even shorter step to Climate Chaos.
When you were a small child socializing with other children, you probably knew at least one child who appeared to you an immoral bully. Then you grew up and met a few more of the same along the way, separating yourself from them with your own personal moral code. Now we arrive at the present only to discover the immoral bullies bred, ignited by wind driven flames of selfish greed, blind to everyone and everything else that appears to stand in their way. There isn't room or funding to incarcerate them all. They exist among us like armies of fire ants breeding under the pavements running though all of disturbia, every day thirstier, seeking self-satisfaction, bursting forth as a globe wide breathing red carpet moving in all directions at once leaving nothing of the living in their wake. You have noticed by now there is no solution. You have also noticed the public relations campaigns working overtime to calm your nerves. You have heard there are investigative commissions, too, but they always seem to melt away inside the information deluge. A patsy here, a wrist slap there, and it continues unabated.
Hog manure lagoons, a bacon by product, borne from deliberate design to service the majority segment of the population susceptible to lifetimes of lies. Yes, it does all fit together, no campaign left behind. No fire ant unfed. Every silver lining has a cloud on the outside. If there was ever going to be any change, we'd have seen it by now. We'd have seen it long before Obama "campaigned". But that's not what we're seeing at all. This time, we're looking at a brand new graph where the red line heads straight down into the firey core of Planet Earth. In our New World the scumbags on "The List" are walking free, you understand, encouraged even, bailed-out and bonused, shameless, perhaps having an Absolut with a slice of Key lime running 15 knots on a beam reach thinking maybe its time to apply a little sunblock.

The preacher man says it's the end of time
And the Mississippi River she's a goin' dry
The interest is up and the Stock Markets down
And you only get mugged
If you go downtown
I live back in the woods, you see
A woman and the kids, and the dogs and me
I got a shotgun rifle and a 4-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
I can plow a field all day long
I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn
We make our own whiskey and our own smoke too
Ain't too many things these ole boys can't do
We grow good ole tomatoes and homemade wine
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
Because you can't stomp us out
And you cant make us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma'am
And if you ain't into that we don't give a damn
We came from the West Virginia coalmines
And the Rocky Mountains and the and the western skies
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly
My grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a businessman
He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights
And I'd send him some homemade wine
But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For 43 dollars my friend lost his life
Id love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes
And shoot him with my old 45
Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
Cause you can't stomp us out and you can't make us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma'am
And if you ain't into that we don't give a damn
We're from North California and south Alabam
And little towns all around this land
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Starting to get back into "summer" shape with all the yard and garden stuff--this here, that there. Garden is starting to pop--
I am having a very relaxed clarity of sorts--I'll ride it while it's here--birds seem a little louder, colors brighter--it's good. Having more of a disconnect from the world and a melting into nature--
OK, I'm a suburban boy who has kinda turned country--very happy to be where we are with all the green and hills--
We don't say grace, but there is gratitude
Didn't lose anything in the stock market
In good health
Smart, loving, tough woman
In sync
Less and less a part of this world
Looking forward to the next
Music rockin'
or Blues-n'
Cat's laughing
Spring has sprung
And I'm drinking it in
And letting it shower me clean
Much love to you and Mr. Man :)

Nina,
Your prose is beautiful.Your artwork is breathtaking. Thank you for sharing them.
Anonymous, you are too kind. Thank you. I am glad you found something of value in your visit.
Jj, we are all of us effected differently, when it does not appear that we are effected directly, likely we know someone among our families and close friends that are strongly effected.
As an example, your backwoods character, while seeing himself an optimistic anarchist, is subject to the same municipal property taxes as everyone else. Without liquidity obtained by participation in the money ecomomy, does he intend to just murder foreclosure agents? We have to hope his family, and their supply of healthy catfish, survives minus his team input when he's on death row.
Spunk is admirable, but is it realistic?
Nina,
Your poetic prose and your art are inspirational.
Thanks.
I'm going through a difficult crisis in my family life right now. I believe there is hope, not in the Obama way, but in the way that means honesty, work (pulling the weeds and fertilizing the garden of a marriage too-long neglected, which led to some normal results statistically, but it's still hard to deal with). There's a wonderful 3 year old child involved, and I would do walk a million miles to keep his family life stable, and be near him for the coming unknowns and likely catastrophes.
Unfortunately, much of my prep money will now be going to the ghoulish industry of counselors and psychologists, but that's better than losing even more in the growth industry of lawyers helping people to separate when they should be coming together.
On the bright side, at least we know where the weeds are now
And I'm going to have a fairly large garden this year...
Yes, dialog is key.
How many families are going through what I am, wasting precious time and resources on hyper-rationalistic models of modern relationship management, when they could be gardening, creating arts, crafts, and useful things, and teaching their children how to sing, dance, grow things, and how to navigate the world of nature that still is hanging on?
God(s) help me. But things will improve... unlike the economy, my spiritual and married life really did hit bottom. A complete lack of creativity, and complete subservience to the ravenous beast of our so-called civilization will do that. I say that knowing that I am responsible for my actions, and that I could have acted differently. Or could I have? That, I will never truly know, but one can take responsibility and act out of love without going too deeply into metaphysics.
I suppose that's always the question--how far are you willing to go--and when. Are the lines in the sand shifting with every breeze and wave? How much shit has to have hit the fan before the property tax collectors get caught in the blades--after all, they're just doing their job-(where have I heard that?)-that's one of the reasons I think it will remain a slow rolling boil--always just under what will make someone blow.
One at a time, in rapid succession--but not all at once.
My point was more so in line with the article you linked to about people being so F***ing helpless and not even being able to plant a garden, hunt, fix things, etc.
Jj
Jj junior, I love that song, man. It was the redoubtable Alex Jones introduced me to it ... one of the first country songs I actually enjoyed.
I just heard about the pigshit lagoons a few days ago. Apparently there's so much chemical pollution in them that they're reddish-pink, rather than the brown one might reasonably expect. And we eat the beasts who produce that crap ... wonders never cease.
"If this can't go on...."
It won't. One way or another, Change is coming.
Publius, the author of Wood, Metal and the Story of the World is divorced with custody of his three children, you might have seen that? We can't know the details of why that happened, but immaturity comes to mind. When people are stuck in hyper-romantic belief systems they undermine their larger potential, that of contributing to the survival, peace of mind and well being of the team. Most of our social mores go against development of this larger potential, we won't get much affirmation that romance and its accompanying expectations in many ways is actually a polluter of sharing responsibility. Romance is ego-driven, while sharing responsibility requires mindful humility and forgiveness.
It is interesting how financially exhausting your whole cycle is - think of that taking place on a global scale and all who are enriched by these cycles.
Of course, that was just your representative involved in the "difficult crisis", the real you is the gardener nurturing your little son.
We are in the change right now, this is how it looks from the inside. What it becomes past this time is the question. I'm using the bell curve as a sort of guide in that we're on the downside of the industrial peak which means everybody has to continually redefine ways for their own survival. Every day. In other words, we know its all going down, we know what worked yesterday doesn't work today. But something will work because it always did for our ancestors otherwise we would not be here now, we just have to stay focused and flexible. I generally lean toward Visible's optimism agreeing that spirituality is THE only vehicle capable of transporting survivors through these strange times. I guess that makes us passengers in good company on Noah's Ark. But then, that ship still must somehow pass through the Straits of Climate Chaos which are totally uncharted waters.
Me thinks the ship of fools is full to capacity--glad I'm not on it. It's like the hype over diamonds that has been carefully nurtured when there are warehouses full of them--and look at the lives torn and lost to get them--but a diamond, as they say, is forever...kinda like herpes.
So many people say they want to simplify their lives, live simpler, eat better, but don't want to give up, or stop seeking, the crap and lie in the sky that has always been the illusion that surrounds--
I'm getting a high off of looking at the garden and smiling every time it rains and replenishes our well water. We buy our meat locally and know the farmers we get it from and how they treat their animals--as I mentioned before (I think) we didn't have a penny in the stock market--took it out years ago (what little there was) but of course none of the experts saw this coming-not the details, but the big picture--just like now--- and we're no smarter than anyone else--just thought it would come sooner. Same way with a lot of things that people are stocking up on--but all those things run out, and break, so you better have a good plan "B", and "C" and throw in a "D" for good measure. Hell, I have enough sharp axes that don't need grinding (: hanging where they always are--water, no problem, we put in a hand pump well last summer--for AG purposes so it didn't have to be registered--then again, by writing that here, maybe I just "registered" it--oh well, "F"-em'--all of us can take down a deer at 400 yards and know what to do with it after that--it ain't perfect, and neither are we, but panicking never got anyone anywhere--I'm expecting it, not dreading it--and if it doesn't, it doesn't--guess that's about it--
This will backfire on them though because people will become more independent ( or die) because help is coming from nowhere other than your own two hands and your brain--imagine the clarity when folks can't get their meds, TV and aspartame---hmmmmmm

Ran Prieur's essay appears on After Armegeddon today, you won't want to miss it. He observes human evolution presently to be a sort of deviating sidespecies from that which was originally intended by Nature. I recommend following up Ran's essay with Survival Acres' People are Pathetic, which perfectly illustrates the point.
Nina,
Thanks for the link to Ran's essay. He stayed with us a few months ago. I quite enjoyed his visit.
And thanks for the words on my earlier comment.
I agree with you on the cultural emphasis on romantic love being destructive. Romance does exist at times, of course - even a new friendship can be romantic in terms of new emotions and desire to be with the new person. And people in committed relationships can and are attracted to the new, but this does not need to destroy the old relationships: unless you "buy" the myth of the "one and only love" who will satisfy your every need forever. Now that's a well-marketed piece of BS that really makes a lot of money.
What if the new is allowed a place in the old, without jealousy? I know a man whose wife won't let him out of her sight, ever, even to go out with male friends. He looks like a scared miserable rabbit. That's what I saw in his eyes last time I saw him: the eyes of a scared rodent. We'll never see him again, thankfully, because he was so offended by the fact that another of our friends is gay, that he became insulting. So be it.
Well, it's time to leave my cubicle to go home and make dinner for my family...
RAN visited YOUR house, OHMYGOSH, what a trip that must have been! Were you one of the ones who insisted he see the sights or were you one of the ones who let him nap and cook and use your computer.... I followed every detail. Ahahahaha Seriously, I think Ran is to our world what Decartes was to his in that they will be quoting him far into whatever the future is.
I mean, if CO2 levels are brought down like yesterday, like 1809 yesterday.
Back to romance and moving on, every time I see a failed relationship I see two people who did not treat each other as they treat their best friends. Everything would be so much easier if we were not conditioned to star in our own reality shows.
those who make it, will be those who make it where it's not easy to make it--
if you don't know already that you've made it, you are bound not to
Ah Jj, that's quite a jumbleful, would you care to expand on that? Are you talking about making it through these interesting times or are you talking about making lasting relationships or are you listening to Beck?
Relationships are the cornerstone-- be they with others, or nature--Off hand, I can't think of very many people I would want to be with in the upcoming, and current times--other than Juli, no adults really--some friends of the boys, and a couple others who we are in synchronicity with--
If you don't "get it", the balance is simply not there--
No leeches, parasites, whiners or bible thumper's need apply--this is real, and not some fairy tail--like the marriage myth, and so many others--it's the real deal and you contribute and stand tall with some laughter mixed in the recipe--I don't mean this in a "kill them all, let god sort them out" kind of way, but in the ability to be in sync with nature in particular in gathering and growing--it will have to be there or we won't "be"--me thinks nature is going to be very selective in who remains--those who are in sync will be shown--heck, we are being shown now--class is in session--
As far as Glenn Beck goes, I don't listen to him, and warn others every chance I get---He's the new packaged messiah, didn't you know that----lol
Jj Galt
No, this Beck

Or this beck? Here a beck there a beck everywhere a beck, beck-----
All together now ... E I E I Ohhhhhhh
Jj:
I thought she meant Jeff Beck. Glen, well he's a trip huh?
Speaking of children, had to laugh today at my five year old. Last month I arrived at the border of Canada and was refused entry. Which is sad in many ways, one being I was going to toss a snow ball at Psychegram on my way to Ottawa.
Anyway was on the phone today with the kid, and she is quite afraid of things, like bugs and dogs and cats. So I said listen, it's okay to be careful with animals, but no reason to be afraid. And she says, "dat tee...they creep me out!" And I had a good belly laugh over that. That's what I love about kids, you never know what they are gonna say.
Nina:
Yes, the great Ran visited my house.
I just let him be. I didn't make him do one thing he didn't want to do - well, one night I brought him out to meet my best friend and only friend who knows that the world is changing and challenges are brewing. We hung out at my favorite local pub, where people are free to wear kilts and play their musical instruments in group jams. He really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed his visit. He's been reminding me that I promised to digitize a Gordon Lightfoot album/LP for him, but I'm behind schedule - for one thing, my wife brutally destroyed the tonearm of one my mint turntables in a fit of anger. Luckily, I have an exact twin of this turntable, as well as others. (I'm downsizing my collection if anyone is interested in getting back into the only method of storing sound that will last more than 10 years after the collapse - there will be no new lasers for burned out CD players).
My father-in-law didn't get Ran at all - he wondered what "he did for a living." Ran wrote about this on his blog. My father-in-law seemed shocked when Ran told him he basically didn't do anything for a living.
Humorous interaction, but telling. My in-laws are good people, they are gardening, they are thrifty and they recycle. But they simply can't understand or believe in the degree of change - a change of paradigms. My ma-in-law actually told me she thinks there will be relative affluence here in the good ol' USA for some time. I presume she's hoping it will last until she gets to check out.
Finally, regarding my relationship/ marriage trouble: the story is far too complex to get into here.
My main goal, more important to me than the "marriage" itself, is to be close by to take care of my 3 year old son. No matter what, I will not let anything get in the way of that: not my own selfish ego needs, and not the absurdly expensive therapy bills that could be dispensed with if we just dared to put it all down honestly. I love my wife, and we actually agreed recently to go towards a lot more openness all around. But that didn't prevent this current crisis.
My wife, however, truly believes that the current system has a future: she's studying for an master of public affairs, and plans to have a "career." She's trying to coerce me into applying for the State Department exam - as if I would even be allowed into the halls of government after the things I've written and said.
Life is complex. My need to be near my son, though, is simple.

Another great and apropos essay by Charles Eisenstein:
http://www.realitysandwich.com/reuniting_self_autoimmunity_obesity_and_ecology_health_part_2
The "relationship" crisis I am going through has everything to do with looking for connection... this essay shows how our society of alienation makes crisis almost inevitable in our lives, whether the crisis leads to obesity, disease, mental illness or just plain neurosis.
Excerpt:
"Consigned by modern civilization to a tiny, isolated self, we suffer from a powerful unmet need for love and connection. To meet this need is more important than life itself. People will do almost anything to meet it. It is time to release our condemnation of the people with bloated bodies, or bloated bank accounts, houses, egos, or other enlargements of the separate self. They are merely trying to meet their most beautiful needs. They are trying to connect and find love, in whatever tiny way is available at the end of the Age of the Machine. As I described in the Miracle of Self-creation essays, it is foolish and futile to try to fight the expression of these needs, whether in ourselves or others. If food is the only way someone has to show herself love, would you impose a diet on her and take away even that scrap of self-love? No, it is much better to do what you can to meet the need directly. The same is true for all those greedy people in SUVs, or whoever else happens to be the favorite target of our derogation. Meet the need -- the need for love and connection -- directly. It is easy if you see the true source of the behavior. It is easy to see people with eyes of love, if you know that they are simply trying to meet their beautiful needs. "
Publius, I am aching for you to get through your crisis. I am certain you will, especially in the birchbark phase. Surely this is the solution, since it will occupy you completely and other things will become small in comparison. Going with Nature always works, going against Nature never can.
Yes, I recall well Ran's post about your father-in-law. VERY INSTRUCTIVE.
I am honored to have you visit this blog. Your comments are very thoughtful and much appreciated.
Also, thanks for that link. Did you know that Charles Hugh Smith is on that very topic hot and heavy lately? Eisentein nails it perfectly.
Nina,
Your thoughts are not just welcome: I can feel the positive energy, and it has already made a difference.
My wife talked to me last night, and I was surprised to hear that she said for the sake of our family, she would give up the idea of working for the State Department and therefore having to move every two years. She had recently being trying to coerce me into taking the required test to work for the FedGov...
She also said that IF some kind of collapse happens (a big if in her mind - she at least admits the possibility, but thinks it slim because Obama is such a genius), she will "walk with me" and do what we need to do. (In my mind that means homesteading our family land up north).
All in all, a big change due to both of us trying honesty, communication, and empathy. Although there is a ways to go, that's for sure. I precipitated the crisis, but it was better sooner rather than later.
Enough boring details... we both felt un-cherished by the other.
A big disappointment for me is the reactions of outsiders, i.e., friends... one of my wife's friends wrote her a five page letter on why she should leave me... Five pages. She's a marketing executive or something, so it must have been quite a tour de force of every trick in the modern armamentarium of individualism, egoism, grudge-holding, and pro-alienation dogma.
It's amazing how much a child of 3 can sense what's happening, and how much happier he is when his parents are loving towards each other.
Request: do you have an online gallery of your art? Just to be able to view it in greater resolution. And I know you aren't trying to sell or make illusory dollars with your art, but I'm a willing buyer/donor/whatever at some point...
Or we can trade - one of my first canoes could be a miniature one for display.
Nina, what a profound thread you've hosted here. I thank you for the plug/mention... and for blogging. You are a treasure.
Geeze, Charles, you make me blush. You've got it backwards, see, you're one of our gods. We're just the little hangers-on lavishing in the luxury of your light. I am in your debt.
Thank you.
Publius, you don't need to send Charles the Eisentein link, I already did and I think he likes it.
Namaste, I am surrounded by geniuses.
