Parades of hope against the backdrop of fear

While I read the blogs linked in the blog list, I read a lot more that there isn't room left to link here.  That's a given experience, a daily occurrence, facts and fiction of life in the internet age of which we are all doing the same thing more or less at varying times.  What is not an ordinary experience is visiting these "stories" in real life which is why I went along with the group to a candidate's rally.  I'll synthesize it for you briefly: the appearance of this candidate was exactly as we've seen him on TV with the exception of the crowds, crowds numerically rivaling a Stones concert at Madison Square Garden, for example.  What was originally presented as a speech, likely under an hour or less, turned out to be an all day affair in order to get a "good" seat which meant a faraway glimpse of what it was you agreed to attend at all.  Actually, I agreed to go because it was something I would normally never do, such as ride in a giant Cat garbage compactor gliding over the L.A. city dump.  Further, if I was going to continue to blog about our bizarre lives on Planet Earth in 2012, seeing up close in 3D just how the appointed Earth leaders do whatever it is they do, in person, seemed worthwhile.

From where we connived our seats, connived because only a mere hundred or so people were able to occupy them, thousands upon thousands stood, the angle of the setting sun made photography impossible.  After dark it remained impossible as the stage lights (think Woodstock-style scaffolding) acted as more Suns.  The real show was sneaking peeks at the well-armed, military uniformed security squad on the roof of the adjacent building.  If there was anything to walk away with after such a show, it was the demographics of the crowd on the ground and the roars of approval.  The content was nothing we have not heard before.  The sad part was seeing the sheer numbers of true believers, the shabby and rundown, the confused and uncomfortable, the disabled and the aisle dancing, placard holding families with strollers, the obvious poverty of beleaguered persons and congregational fellowship of unbridled patriotism under the media spell that their immediate future will change everything wrong with today for a better tomorrow if one just manages to climb aboard the magic Diebold bus.  I liken it to a tent revival, the cultists, having lost everything, still filled with worship and couch change as if nothing, no matter how goofy, can shake that faith in the snake handlers' snake oil cure-all.  Too bad the show organizers overlooked the inspirational Bondo of a good gospel choir.

Thus, the first of the candidates' debates was a rehash of the same impossible shuck 'n jive we know all too well because we've read it, seen it and we live with it in one fashion or another every day, like it or not.  Nowhere present in any of these "entertainments" was there discussion of any real plan to survive climate change or what we are going to do when our own municipalities declare States of Emergency (emerge and see), leading to full bankruptcy which means contractual obligations will not be met.  Who will fight the wildfires then?  Will it all become so unweildy they will eventually sit back and let it just burn until there is nothing left to fuel the flames?  And don't even think about calling 911.  It seems as if all the candidates are doing at their meetups and globally televised "debates" is to trade inaccurate statistics on how the health insurance industry will continue to gorge on whomever's version of healthcare is forced down our throats, mandated under a tax penalty - a penalty tax actually of which those very funds could have been paid, and in many cases probably will, to see your doctor.  Now tell me, is it not stupid that one must pay just about the same amount of money to the IRS, if that money were available to the individual, to receive immediate medical attention?  Imagine how it works - law abiding citizen, churchgoing, college educated, but unemployed, deeply in debt, children and more on the way, home in foreclosure, suddenly notes tax scofflaw on his lifetime list of unplanned mile markers.  You better believe these folk were also in attendance at the rally, cheering.

And then the day came last week, at some point, there was yet another negative Monsanto mention on some site out of the hundreds visited so that nothing really stuck, but the thought, which according to all we know about what it is they do, came together in such a way it overwhelmed the latest evil reports and took on the solid form of the answer we've sought for how many years now?  Everything since that insightful moment unfortunately fits.  The birthrate in the US is down for the fourth year.   We are to think this is because of the economy, the 2nd Great Depression, ah, the recent recession which we are also to think is well along the road to recovery. Maybe we're not thinking too well, maybe the steady diet of pesticides in GMO seeds, the massive romance with convenience foods pushed at low prices or free with ubiquitous government food stamps, maybe this has something more to the point to do with low birth rates?  And maybe Monsanto is in league with a certain global agenda and everyone including the suicided farmers and new moms, even the journalists offering implausible justifications are oblivious?  They want us to think an under-performing economy does not translate into something as basic as increased sexual activity.  Hey, when you have no money to go out, what are your plans for the evening?  And what do we know for sure anyway, maybe legitimate rape is on the rise and women's bodies just sort of magically shut down all those mysterious female secretions that make babies?  My friends, I will not insult your intelligence, you and I know the global population needs to be lowered asap, there simply is not enough of anything to go around. All the media's trending growth reports are growth only in their clever manipulation of tragic facts.

The debate of my dreams will come on the day these Charlie McCarthys lay out realistic repairs granting every man the right to choose and construct plans of his own making wherever his vision of survival appears most possible.  That the candidates admit to being powerless over Nature and throw off the reins of the personhoods that train them, promote them, pay them and mold their agenda and allegiances. The candidates are their spokespeople, testing consumer enthusiasm, allowing them to statisticize response and thus reach further.  As long as there are so many populations stuck inside ridiculous beliefs they are free, better, smarter humans than all other humans existing outside their country's borders and and will always be safe and prosperous thanks to the benevolent all-seeing government, everything is heading on a perfectly linear course towards cruel, unnecessary and absolute chaos worsened by the accelerating effects of climate change and its revolving disasters.  We know how that came around too, don't we.

Truly, posting on this subject is not pleasant, nor particularly deep.  In between the rare moments when we are not under the cloud of the enforcers, I have many other things to be said here.  Perhaps the pain of life itself is on hiatus in those hours of system anguish in which case there are too many who welcome the intellectual exercise.  However, the epidemic of re-election fever, simply in its overabundance, is making us ill, queasy and becomes cause for strange and unlikely interactions pitting us against our fellows as if the clock was turned back to the Civil Rights Movement.  In reference to our last post on Fear of Being Real, it appears no one is willing to experience the consumerless lead-up to authentic change.  As Charles Hugh Smith says  Crisis is a Positive Force, I've said as much myself, for it brings out the innate compassion and self-reliance of every human being, but to get there we have to be fully willing to rely on our own creativity in survival and that requires we put fear on the far back burner.  Of course we have that creativity in our makeup, its just been dulled like the useless appendix so that we live inoffensively on the chain gang.  Few escape successfully, no one apparently has ever been successful enough to live to tell about it.

***

Last but definitely not least, somehow I missed this on Property from Ran Prieur last April and today is a good time to bring it into your thought process.

"April 24. I've written before that we could define the "owner" of a place as whoever lives there, and factor out the whole concept of "property". Last month I discovered that Pierre-Joseph Proudhon had the same idea in 1840, in his book What Is Property? Specifically, Proudhon noticed that our word "property" blurs together two opposite concepts: the rights of someone who actually works with a piece of land, a house, a sum of money, a tool; and the rights of someone who does not work with it, who might never see it, but who is said to "own" it because, well, the rules say so, and we don't question them.

Looking just at land, where do pieces of "bought" land originally come from? Usually they are violently stolen from indigenous people, or in the case of unoccupied wilderness, some central authority simply declares "ownership" out of thin air. Tribal people have the concept of territory, but they would think it's insane for one tribe to "own" the land that another tribe occupies. Even neolithic farmers, who have already carved fields out of the forest, would not understand how one family could work a field "owned" by another -- unless they were slaves.

The concept of non-occupying ownership is like a magic spell that makes violent conquest and near-slavery seem natural. It enables ecological destruction, because people actually living on land, seeing the effects of their actions, are less willing to cut down forests and deplete topsoil than remote commanders seeing only numbers. And it enables positive feedback in wealth distribution: the two big ways the rich get richer are rent and interest, one where you pay a fee to the "owner" of land you're occupying, and the other where you pay a fee to the "owner" of money you're using...."

As one who has dropped out of the "politics" game altogether, it becomes more and more like theater when I watch the process unfold around us. Really BAD theater at that. But of course, there is no true escape from it is there?

Sitting on my front porch, playing my guitar and listening to the birds and watching the leaves fall lately, I have been set upon by these political creatures going door-to-door seeking my vote. The interactions have ranged from true engagement to a real sense of discomfort at my proclamation that I will not support ANY of them and give them legitimacy. I always ask how much apathy they are seeing, and know from the response that I am not alone in rejecting this farce.

The same lines repeated over and over; "lower taxes on business to provide jobs", "defend the sanctity of marriage", "protect education", "strong defense against those who would harm us"......blah, blah.

I try to be calm and civi. I see something resembling fear in their eyes though when I tell them how they are wasting their time and just perpetuating the process that has led to our decline, while serving only themselves under the guise of "public" service.

Waiting for DHS to knock next.....

It would blow their little minds to discover they are not even serving themselves.

Not that we own ourselves anyway,

Looking at it this way neil, is like looking at a teetering house of cards. You think it can't possibly continue, but by the sheer will of evil it appears absolute. The passing of time is also a part of the same fiction, just because it has thrived and emboldened itself throughout written history, does not mean it is indefinitely sustainable. It is artifice after all.
(For the purpose of demonstration)
What is especially interesting is how the overall fiction is recreated on a minute by minute basis in the lives of all who believe it is good and correct.

Radical Simplicity and the Middle Class

"...3.2. Sanitation – Just like if the water mains stopped functioning, urban centres would be thrown into disorder very quickly if our systems of sanitation broke down for any length of time. If suddenly we could not flush the toilet, there would be a significant risk that urban centres would quickly become plagued by waste-borne diseases, so proper sanitation systems can also be considered one of life’s basic necessities. But what exactly is a ‘proper’ sanitation system? Is it a requirement, for example, that one defecates into drinking-quality water, as is customary in the developed world? Surely this practice is amongst our greatest shames and indulgences. In the State of Victoria, Australia, where I live, the government is investing billions of dollars in a desalination plant, apparently so that Victorians can continue to defecate in drinking-quality water. One might have thought that it would have been more sensible to begin flushing our toilets with greywater, which would save millions of litres of water every day, and cost almost nothing (e.g. collect shower water in a bucket), but apparently most people in the developed world would find that an intolerable inconvenience. As if we did not have more important things to be spending our money on! While our river systems degrade, we still seem to think that our bourgeois excrement deserves drinking-quality water, an issue upon which posterity is unlikely to judge us kindly. ..."

Nina,

Great post and well put thoughts.

I'm (almost) jealous of your going to a big political rally. I hate being in large crowds to begin with and spending time at a political rally when a new compost bin needs to be built seems like a huge waste of time. However, for me anyway, leaving such an event and snarling under my breath and clenching my fist does provide some tension relief, at least if I don't carry it over to making the compost bin. Tends to end up with weird angles and poor quality work.

I've find myself tuning out most of the political chatter from candidates available to read and hear. The only ones I pay any attention to at all are the local candidates and issues. At least I have some influence on them, not much, but many of them I can talk directly to and at least have my say. If they convince me that they will do little or no damage to folks, I can approve of them. Few indeed have convinced me of such. But, as the bottom line, I am convinced that we can't change the direction significantly even at the local level. The best I think we can do is limit the damage they can do, stall any actions on their part and that could become a full time endeavor if I allowed it to consume my attention. Frankly, I think they are just waiting us out till we are all dead with no replacements in the wings. Way too many younger folks think our present situation is all normal and just can't get all that worked up over it.

Can we all sing along; baaaa baaa baaa in 5 part harmony?

Nina, that was a simply eloquent post. I found myself reading and then re-reading practically every sentence.

How incredible it is to be born in these times. And, what a gift that we have a place to come for refuge and community separate from the delusion and delusional.

Blessings, Nina.

Briefly, an observation about Romney in last week's debate, which is being lauded as his "edge" over Obama, the whole time I watched, he smirked that very same weird, wild-eyed, tight-lipped smirk we have seen on those very notorious screwballs such as Jared Loughner, Todd Akin and James Holmes. What in the world is going on with that?

nina said...

Murph, I'd rather build something sustainable too. But I'm sort of on temporary hiatus from doing these important things in my current location, not that I want it that way. In the city, you either are a self-employed immigrant slapping these things together or pay a group of them to do them for you and God forbid anyone would build a compost bin or a greywater system here. There is no room and I suspect (but don't really know for sure) local codes would prevent it as well as HOAs. I saw also in exurban CA in the CDRs, that certain important survival systems were outlawed such as making your own well.

Consider yourself fortunate in rural Oregon in spite of the resistance, its only a matter of time before everyone will be forced to get real. As the Archdruid points out, it could happen in many different ways at anytime. But if Iran comes to the forefront, we are all going to have to ditch the falderal fast and get with reality no matter what stands in the way. And look at you, you are already there! I've seen the photos of the new porch too. Nice, nice work.
Did I mention that to even get into the rally football fields, one was forced to pass through airport style screening, metal detectors and bag checks?
It felt eerily similar to walking into Temple Grandin's slaughterhouse design.

RESPECTS

Nina, that Love returns to you multiplied many times over. I wish to express my gratitude to you also for providing such a space as this to feel connected to Source. Thank you!

I found myself at your gallery for the first time yesterday and must say that your work is sublime. "ARAWAKA" and "FLAG OF ARAWAKA" both moved me deeply. You are so gifted.......

My fondest wish is for us to have the time and a place to create, feast, and revel in one another's company - sharing our gifts in real-time and celebrating this thing we call life. The desire to be with kindred spirits is intense, but it would appear that our reunion is to be somewhere down the road or in the next incarnation?

My porch noodling is done mostly in an attempt to find the muse again. It appears I have lost my gift for now, so any recording would be of no benefit to anyone other than one who wanted to witness what a broken connection sounds like. The absence of joy shows in the lack of vibrational magic wherever I look. Just putting one foot before the other and praying for deliverance at the moment.

While they were playing the evil Caribs rowed over and spied on them from the mountains before the slaughter. The two pieces you mentioned are this place linked below. Been a week of car tool karma, pulled muscle in ribs, missed last week's wildlife work, but going tomorrow. Drove 300 mi. RT to see one of my drum gurus perform, dine with the band backstage, catch up, reflect on our Gandharva-brother's recent passing (I spoke and played at the memorial).
Basically, having been reading of Vis' recent auspicious graces, I'm also under a spell of hugely auspicious and life-changing graces. But, its so stunning, I am reticent to even bring forth words. Inspiration and energy high, creatively and otherwise. And this all while having a Saturn square transit to Sun. WTF? It's weird and unnerving.

Part 1:
Pai-chang's Fox

In honor of Halloween, I will read you a Zen ghost story.

Once when Pai-chang gave a series of talks, a certain old man was always there listening togetherv with the monks. They left, he would leave too. One day, however, he remained behind. Pai-chang asked him, " who are you, standing here before me?"

The old man replied, " I am not a human being. In the far distant past, in the time of Kasyapa Buddha, I was the head priest at this mountain. One day a monk asked me, "Does an enlightened person fall under the law of cause and effect or not?" I replied, "Such a person does not fall under the law of cause and effect." With this I was reborn five hundred times as a fox. Please say a turning word for me and release me from the body of a fox."

He then asked Pai-chang, " Does an enlightened person fall under the law of cause and effect or not?"

Pai-chang said, "Such a person does not evade the law of cause and effect."

Hearing this the old man immediately was enlightened. Making his bows he said, "I am released from the body of a fox. The body is on the other side of this mountain. I wish to make arequest of you. Please, Abbot, perform my funeral as for a priest." Pai-chang had a head monk stike a signal board and inform the assembly that after the noon meal there would be a funeral service for a priest. The monks talked about this in wonder. "All of us are well. there is no one in the morgue. What does the teacher mean?"

After the meal, Pai-chang led the monks to the foot of a rock on the far side of the mountain. And there, with his staff, he poked out the body of a dead fox. He then performed the ceremony of cremation. That evening he took the high seat before his assembly and told the monks the whole story.

Huang-po stepped forward and said, "As you say, the old man missed the turning word and was reborn as a fox five hundred times. What if he had said the right answer each time he was asked aquestion - what would have happened then?

Pai-chang said, " Just step up here closer and I'll tell you." Huang-po went up to Pai-chang and slapped him in the face.

Pai-chang clapped his hands and laughed, saying, "I thought the Barbarian had a red beard, but here is a red-bearded Barbarian."

Part 2:

Wu-men's Comment

"Not falling under the law of cause and effect." Why should this prompt five hundred lives as a fox? "Not evading the law of cause and effect." Why should this prompt a return to human life? If you ahve the single eye of realization, you will appreciate how old Pai-chang lived five hundred lives a fox as lives of grace.

Wu-men's Verse

Not falling, not evading -
two faces of the same die.
Not evading, not falling -
a thousand mistakes, ten thousand mistakes.

I'm told that Halloween was originally a Celtic holiday, marking the harvest and the beginning of their new year, And it wa said to be the time when the worlds of the living and of the dead were at their closest, and that on that night the dead could cross over and walk among the living. So the ancient Celts lit bonfires and made offerings of food to placate the spirits of the dead. Robert Aitken in his commentary on this story says that in Japan the fox is regarded the way a black cat is in the West, as something sinister, the familiar of spirits and witches. The way Halloween is celebrated now, we take images of what we're most afraid of, images of death, and turn them around into life-affirming play. And it is especially fitting that Greenwich Village, with it's large gay population which has known so much death in recent years, has made Halloween a particular object of celebration.

This koan is about the old fantasy of somehow going beyond life and death, escaping as they say, from the wheel of cause and effect. In the folklore of India, where Buddhism first developed, a person's lifetime of karma caused them to be reborn, and enlightenment, whatever that was, somehow brought about nirvana, the cessation of endless death and rebirth. So the old man when he was the abbot and gave his answer he was merely saying what everyone believed, that enlightenment meant somehow escaping from this world of cause and effect. But there is no escape. This koan reminds us that even when we realize the oneness of all things, we mustn't lose sight of their impermanence. The spirit world, the world of enlightenment is none other than this world. Giving the body of the fox all the formal funeral rites of a dead monk is a symbolic way of enacting this identity.

True practice always brings us back to life as it is. And Halloween and the fox each serve to remind us of what we want to ignore, that we are bodies, bodies that suffer, live and die. When we truly accept this fact, Halloween becomes a chance to celebrate, and, as Mumon says in his poem, the old man truly enjoys his five hundred lives as a fox.
