Are you seeing any progress? At this time, that which we feel is
progress, although weakly discernible since we try hard to see
"something" in order for it all not to have been an all-encompassing
waste of a once good thing, is not progress acknowledged by the larger
community, it takes a train you know, mountains must move, a violent
punishing God must come down from the sky with his shepherds staff,
breathing fire with bands of angels ripping off the masks and costumes,
exposing the most intimate, naked fears of the paranoid human species.
God would herald the animals, the seas, the deserts and prairies, both
poles, the foliage and his supreme natural system ensuring once and for
all, they were understood to be his most pure, perfect creations, to be
celebrated and treasured for they make his projects run smoothy. Our
progress levels seem as slight acknowledgement of basic truth 101, there
are many more advanced studies to be undertaken, it furthers one to
cross the water. Basic truth 102 is good, but Basics 103 gets a little
slippery because of the commitment required to maintain previous
understandings while the class ventures out of doors blindfolded. One
person wears the blind, the other leads the way. That's the one where
we are forced to abandon fear and embrace trust and can go very wrong if
your trust has been misplaced. Fortunately, with God, the coursework
offers the solution which is to trust regardless because anyone reaching
level 103 is already on the same page as you are.
Are we
waiting for God to visit? Not hardly. God is in us already, in the
here and now. This idea of a visiting deity, akin to political
candidates' whistle-stops, is shared by many faux religions and
actually keeps God away, somewhere in a celestial palace, not available
to stand on Earth and straighten out the turmoil in the way it appears
to need, so it is that available self-serving rulers are appointed and
reappointed, telling us they do God's work, which they cannot as is
plainly obvious, yet the fundies persist in this conundrum replete with
erasing Mother's history to the point logic and sensibility of their
motivation is distorted as always happens when someone starts from the
wrong premise. You cannot contemplate the Dharma without consciousness
of that which was already here before mankind came along. WE are not an
original species, we are a sort of byproduct of Apes, Apes are a far
more realized species in comparison. We might have been their
"services" sector because our dexterity proved capable of making tools
and weaponry, but we were never decent helpers, always whining,
grumbling, making deals behind the caves, cheating on the assignments,
thinking our ways were better, that we were overall better beings than
Apes, trading women in secret for the production of evermore skilled and
creative offspring with which to overthrow the unpleasant circumstances
of living without the luxuries the Apes seemingly enjoyed. Man dearly
desired to conquer his lowly status as sub-Ape and systematically,
unknown to the Apes who bore him, fed him, gave him reason to be and the freedom to develop his skills, and began the long ascent
(a descent) to rise above the arrangement. This happened everywhere,
almost simultaneously. This era can be called the birth of human evil.
It was supplemented by a victory of sorts for Mankind so that he saw
himself possessing great power over all. Recall it began with an
accidental hybrid who to this day has still NOT earned the trust of the
Animal Kingdom.
It is a cultivated occupatiom to let your
mind travel and see where it goes. As you throw in memories of your
truth-time online, the story begins to evolve onto a nonfiction mystery
which will take you, very often, to what it was that really went down.
As you know, one connection suddenly leads to another... and this
"making of connections", be they local or far beyond the perimeter of
your personal sphere, is the only kind of progress that ultimately
matters.
* * *
In the process of thinking about trust,
connections and progress, what we really need to talk about is fear in
some of its most common manifestations. For those of you who missed the
comments on the last essay, you would not know we are speaking of the Fear of Being Real.
I will tell you right off, the more real you are the better your
chances of survival anywhere, anytime. Life is not a cakewalk, we were
put here to suffer in order to understand suffering. The Great Wall of
Fear is one of the fundamentals of life, such as appendages and DNA.
Attempting to break through the wall is one of the, if not THE, most
difficult things we can do. There are quick ways to do it, but they
are not as long lasting or life-impacting as doing it on your own
without embellishments. Once you start however, even the smallest crack
in the wall bears great fruit, call it beginner's luck. It will
encourage you to try it again and again because the jewels of
self-knowedge lying inside and the pasture of Universal Plenty on the
other side, patiently wait for you to reach them. With each success you
gleam brighter. There are many who only go so far and quit, thinking
they've figured out all they need to get around it, fearing huge losses
resulting from coming clean with themselves, their enablers and their
followers also locked in lies. It is the Great Wall of Fear after all
and it is fearsome indeed, those who don't make it would be the masses
hard-wired into elaborate systems of false belief. An example would be
that of someone who basically portrays themselves to themselves, and
others, in the context of full-spectrum fabrication, 24/7. Do you know
anyone like that? Although some people who have the most to fear will
sometimes make the breakthrough, this rare occurrence happens only because
living a lie-filled life includes a suffering that in its most unbearable
moments overwhelms them, then compels them to seek another way of
existence.
Some Top Fears in no particular order:
being unloved
loss of shelter
escalating the potential for violence
appearing stupid
being needy, hungry
loss of credibility
perceived as sloppy and careless
chosen to be an accidental enemy
penury
abuse
loneliness
being unjustly taken advantage of
And
those are just common fears, not mine, maybe some were a long time ago,
but fears I have witnessed over the recent past often enough to note
these particular fears are usually the root behind otherwise
inexplicable behavior. I'll be interested in hearing your lists. Some
might interpret these fears as being mostly without physical pain, but
the pain of suffering encompasses physical and intellectual pain, it can
and will kill and/or destroy lives and create medical conditions often
matching one's "worst" fear. The fear experienced typically in wanting
to speak the truth but do not for fear listeners will discredit you and
never again take you seriously is RAMPANT. It stings in your body,
knots the gut. That kind of fear, BTW, is taught in kindergarten or
earlier should one be so unfortunate as to be a product of abusive
parenting. The way to break through that is to forgive and move on,
carrying with you the lessons of support and compassion. When you
examine the root, you are bringing fear to its logical dead end. The
problem is in the examination, we must be motivated to uncover what fear
tells us. Remember that every seemingly chaotic and cloudy event is
fear based. Imagine multiples of fears cascading upon you all at once,
there are people who love this state and others who will not tolerate
it, seeing though the veils and incessantly backtracking for the cause.
It is always startling to discover how routinely those fears listed
above show themselves. Before 2012, of course we saw them, but in 2011
and further back, they were not nearly as stark as today, in the urban
global marketplace where life depends on creative survival in spite of
fear.
Large numbers of city dwellers are walking
around with invisible bandaids over their fears instead of facing
them. This is why wherever you have to go within a city, you are met
with vast sinkholes absent human contact, the silent self of the
stranger recoils from risking a glimpse of you in all your truth, as you
find you are attempting to interact with a robot quoting from the
employees manual. Nothing in these exchanges have any truth to them
other than "yes" or "no". This means whenever we must be present in an
urban setting for whatever reason it is within the quality of a movie,
perhaps They Live, Wall Street, Death of a Salesman or Glengarry Glen Ross, a.k.a. "no one is home", because they are lost in their steamertrunk of fears, making it nearly
impossible for you to accomplish whatever seemingly simple task you went there to achieve. The truth is never
the fantasy.
It also means whenever you are among friends, it
can be guaranteed some or one will fear your straightforward
no-nonsense approach which unfortunately can sometimes translate into
seeing your views rather unsymathetically. That usually happens among
the kind who always have to be right as their drug of chioice - of which
there are as many as there are psychopathies to hide them. Our recent
favorite lesson stands: They-want-it-that-way. Well, fine, but the
unconscious emotional trauma brought on by fear is a killer leaving
untold collateral damage in its wake. Once it is clear to you that you
are perceived as an enemy to the robot, which you cannot help but be -
since your very presence brings up unconscious fears, intimdation,
foreboding, suspicions, it is best to use simple, clear sentences and
leave quickly. It is likely you have nothing at all to do with somone
else's baggage, so be kind, be geniune and brief.
Afterwards,
when you are far away, back in your own comfort zone, you might feel
sad their lives were lost while they were still living. I blame these
fears on childhood abuse and/or a childhood surrounded with the same fears we
are talking about, as if the child sponge fully absorbed those very same fears squeezing the life out of the adults even before the child was
able to name sunshine and rain. I've heard it happens in the womb or
for that matter in conception. Think about it. Work to overcome it.

I use all of those fears as a rod to beat myself,, frequently
But some of them are very very real for me in a very big sense,,,,,,which i know is not really any excuse, but I do
Those fears I find are always chomping away at our feet,,
We have to rearrange them,,pay attention to them prod them a bit, pick them up and put them down,,,I suppose they are always their at the back awaiting their moment to just appear, either through the medium of somebody else or just ourselves feeling low causing ourselves desperation and just bad vibe
I suppose all those fears really are
Are just ourselves needing some attention,,,

Is all fear lie induced,or all lies fear induced or both,,
I dunno,,,
You may of said that somewhere in your post, will have to reread it again nina
Also nina I sometimes have fear of not being able to read some of your long words,,,,, : )
Trouble is in the big lie, basically everybody is working from some form of obscured fear Lurking in the background, that would be the color of the mask we put on that day I suppose,,,,
I have found people where I live do not like honest people speaking openly about things,,some do but most don't,,,

Neil, when you are solid with yourself and doing no harm, there is nothing to fear.
You've survived this far, right? On your own two feet. Fear not, have confidence, nothing can take that away.
Fear is also an inherited or contagious condition, but mostly a manipulated tool, a created threat disguised, to get others to go along with some immoral agenda.
Here is a helpful link where you can copy and paste any word and get the meaning. I use it all the time. http://dictionary.reference.com/

As easily as I pick my fear up I can put it back down again nina,,,,,so am pretty ok really,,,,
They are no trouble i suppose i use them as a sort Of measurement device to look at other peoples fear aswell as my own,,,,
And I now have the best relationship with my son a parent could ever want,,,,due to having to go through those fears and learning from them when I was young and still now
Even though as a parent I might be a bit too much with the things I say to his friends,,,
My son has had some pretty extreme fears to go through aswell but he has come out alright,,,,
I am lucky, for all those little pieces of hell I have had to go through,,,things are ok
I think one of the biggest fears people have is not having any money this is also an instigator of a lot of other fear, but I am ok with that,I have never had any money anyway,,,so don't fear not having it

Hello Ms.Deep....right to the heart of the matter...
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Very strong Terrance, those words bear similarity to the AA prayer. Inspiring and worthy of keeping close.
I had not heard Stuart Wilde's theory, but something about it makes a lot of sense, mass fear from chemical imbalance. Mass fear because the body isn't lubricated enough to operate properly...
Its not my intent to belittle fear, but when you think about the unhealthy quality of the water that is generally available and what the symptoms of dehydration can do to the body/mind, there is a real basis for his position.
neil, maybe it is perceived that among the little people citizens there isn't enough fear, so that those who use it as a weapon and a mirror of their own omnipotence have to keep tightening the screws.
When we are sitting in our rocking chairs talking about truth and false fear, they will call us eccentric.
Eccentric is a nice way of putting it nina,,,,

Hello Nina.....life is not a cake walk.....the truth is never the fantasy and so be kind , be genuine and be brief.....love that!......
From Inelia Benz......on fear processing.....
You can do this exercise at any time, whenever you feel fear.
For best results, it is best to do it in a quiet and private space and working through a list of fears you have written beforehand.
Sit or lie down comfortably with your back straight and close your eyes.
Breathe in deeply and slowly into your abdomen, then breathe out as fast as you can.
Repeat, breathe in slowly, then out as fast as you can.
And once more, breathe in slowly and slowly, then out fast.
Now continue breathing at your own pace.
Scan you physical body from head to toe, to find the energy of fear.
Look for fear. If you cannot find it, read one of your fear items in your list and scan your body again.
Once you find fear in your body, simply look at it.
Don’t analyze it, just look at it.
Allow it to be there.
Allow it to exist.
Allow it to grow and to be.
It could be a physical discomfort, such as a knot, a pain, a location of energy, or through a thought or memory, or it could be just the emotion of fear.
Just look at it.
Observe it.
Feel it.
Allow it to be here.
And say, “fear, you are welcome here.”
Welcome here.
Welcome fear and allow it to grow.
Let it get bigger and bigger.
Allow it to grow, and grow... as big as it can go
Let it be as big as it can possibly get.
Allow it to express itself to you.
But don’t analyze.
Simply allow whatever comes.
Whether words,
thoughts,
memories,
Follow it if it changes into another emotion,
or changes locations in your body.
Whatever it does, welcome the new expression. “you are welcome here, thought... you are welcome here emotion, words, memories, you are welcome here fear.”
You are welcome here.
Watch it. Observe it.
Now, allow yourself to get closer and embrace fear in whatever expression it has chosen.
give it light and love, and allow it to exist.
Thank it for whatever job it had for you, for being with you for so long.
Now, release it into Oneness. Allow it to go free back into Source.
Breathe deeply now.
As you breathe in, breathe in light and love. And as you breathe out, allow that light and love to go to and fill the space where fear used to be.
Now, simply breathe deeply and slowly.
Breathing in light and love, and as you breathe out, allow that light and love to expand throughout your body and out into your environment.
Now, scan your body from your toes to your head and see if there is any of that fear left. If so, repeat the exercise straight away. If not, you can use your list to repeat the exercise, or end now by opening your eyes and having a good stretch.
Repeat this exercise every day until there is no more fear in your life.
a whole lotta love!
I was terrified over and over growing up. Later, I was a crisis intervention agent (and trainer) for four years. I learned that we cannot do empathic responses if we are blocking awareness of our own emotions. I was blocking fear, and had to train myself to hear it in other's voices.
I have always loved that quote from Dune that Terrance posted. A Course in Miracles teaches that we fear when we think we have only our own strength to rely on. When we know that we have the strength of Holy Spirit within, then we can know that there is nothing to fear.
However, I find that it is more often than not, scary to me to imagine myself walking around as if I were Holy Spirit in jeans and a t-shirt. Just not there yet, I guess.
This has to be one of your best posts yet, Nina.
Thank you freeacre, you would be surprised then to discover how many holy spirits are presently walking around in tee shirts and jeans. You might even be one and the beauty lies in your selflessness.
It is interesting our paths took a similar turn "back then", I was an art therapist working with institutionalized teens for awhile until the schism between what could be and what was became impossible.
That seems like a healthy exercise Terrance. Inelia is advocating acceptance and it can only be through acceptance that we would be able to recognize what is going on when its happening.
All possible solutions to the great puzzle are very welcome and I am grateful. I just tried out her process and it appears it can be simplified by doing it in your own head anywhere, anytime it arises.
Nina,
Interesting post,I like it.
I notice that you did not include the very most basic fear, fear of death. Reason? You did include the basic fear of being hungry.
We might examine what appears to me in fear as a survival trait. Fear of some things might be perfectly legitimate and an obvious response to our environment and not be a mental disorder. You know, things like that damned big animal over there with the big teeth and claws and aggressive behavior is to be feared. I tend to feel that way about mega corporations and governments.
Fear also has what seems to be multiple levels of intensity. The most intense of it would activate the primeval fight or flight.
I think that fear has its uses to humans and I think we should separate basic survival fear from abstract fears, which is contained mostly in your list. I will agree that abstract fears are real, but mostly unfulfilled in the long run. I have them myself and most of the time turn out to not be real. I also find that the abstract fears most of the time are dependent upon our assumption of what others think about us, like unloved or loneliness or appearing stupid. Simple quote that I can't remember where it came from; "It is none of my business what you think of me".
While I don't spend much time on the spiritual aspects of fear, I do spend time on on its practicality.
"Wherever there is an other, fear arises."--Ramana Maharshi.
Thanks for the Inelia Benz reference, she seems very interesting.
I always used to wonder why it was that I tended to avert my gaze when passing strangers on the street. I seemed to feel afraid of looking them in the eye. Later I read the book "The Naked Ape" by Desmond Morris, who pointed out that among primates, to stare at a stranger was an aggressive provocation for a fight. But that did not really fully explain it because I did the same in many cases where I felt no fear of the person.
Some years later I read in another book, that the "ego" was not a "thing" or an "entity" but rather it was an activity, and that activity was "the avoidance of relationship." I felt that this was a very illuminating insight about what "I" was doing in those moments of meeting people. "I" was enacting the avoidance of relationship. "I" was being fear.
Enlightenment was to be about becoming responsible for understanding and transcending this fear, this activity.
Brian
I don't see death as a common fear because if people were more conscious of its eventuality, they'd be better, happier people. Most people behave as if they are exempt. The younger they are, the more they unconsciously feel exemption. But many older people refuse to tolerate the idea our time in these bodies is limited, too, and avoid honest discussion, content to cling to comforting, deeply ingrained patterns of irresponsible behavior.
The kind of fear you are talking about, fear for your very survival in the face of extreme danger, certainly IS real, that is classic learned behavior stemming from the collective unconscious avoidance of becoming prey, but we were not talking about that, just some of the common fears that hold us back from being fully human, most of which can be overcome with insight as you stated.
I think, maybe, when we talk about fear of death, we are speaking of the fear of the circumstances under which death might take place. Mostly, people look to "quick and painless" which is a lot like what they want in a lifestyle.
I always look forward to your comments. You have a great mind.
Very interesting Brian. I think we can all learn from that. I do it too, because (I tell myself) I don't want to be interrupted. But we often take it too far and miss out on beautiful opportunities. Is there really an agenda for anything that is more important than interaction with another being? Maybe a mere handful, solely limited to life and death, blood or broken bones.
You know you are a conspiracy theorist if ...
I visited the zoo in SF as a child, in the old days, before there was an elaborate "environment" for an old lion. He was a poor, tattered old guy, laying on a cement slab behind two sets of steel bars, only maybe 15 feet away from me. I was feeling childishly cocky, and thinking to myself, "That lion doesn't look very impressive or scary! What is the big deal about a lion?"
At that moment the old lion let out a roar chose to let out a roar. When it started, I could tell it was and old lion's roar and I persisted in a mental stance for a moment regarding him as safely neutralized. But then the vibration and volume increased and went right up my spine and shook me to the core! My mind was what was neutralized, and my body registered overwhelming primal respectful fear! I saw the mind was an imposter, definitely not in charge!
So it is clear that fear has different loci in the body-mind. Maybe that is why it makes sense to speak of different sheaths or koshas in the being when trying to understand why we don't always do what we know is right. Why some of us can be forced to do things "against our will," etc. Or why we can be, at times, apparently voluntarily self-destructive.
Fear of discomfort (hunger is a good one) seems more like what I am about, not so much fear of death, which is more abstracted in the mind. As Socrates is supposed to have said when his students were urging him to save himself from execution, "Why should I fear death, I have not experienced it yet."
Another wonderful and very timely musing Nina. I have stopped resisiting fear and go immediately to deep breathing whenever fear tries to raise it's ugly head.
As usual, synchronicities abound.
I just came from another site where there was a photo of Ghandi with this quote below it..."There is nothing that wastes the body like worry and one who believes in God should be ashamed to worry about anything whatsoever."
Love and Gratitude from tom in tempe arizona...fall is in the air, it's only 105 today!!!!!
Thanks for bringing the quote. Interesting Ghandi advocates shame in the fearful believer. I'm not sure ashamed is the right word, maybe he meant "...should recognize fear as an endurance test on the road to enlightenment."
I don't like the word ashamed. Ashamed is what we feel about others who perpetrate awful things upon innocents! In our name no less! Yes, I realize we were supposedly ashamed of our nakedness after eating the apple in the Garden, but that story doesn't make a lot of sense. Ashamed just sounds like more negative Wetiko-speak, such as deplore, punish, enemy, justice, attacks, battleground, guilt, etc. When was the last time you used ashamed in a sentence concerning your own actions?

Ahoy Capitano, I thought Talk Like a Pirate Day was September 19th?
Thank you for the reminder on Erich Fromm. Many read his works in high school, many were fascinated by his insights and then many went off to seek their fortunes, paying little if any attention to the things they learned.
From the discussion we just had in this educated household, thanks to you, I think he bears deeper scrutiny and will be visiting the used bookstore shortly.
Nina,
Love the Crow Alley, vibrant wildness, medicinal colors...mmmm.
I recognized the ZeroHedge photos immediately. They bring back deeply fond emotional memories, of hitchhiking through Iran, too young to bother with fear, astonished at the beauty of the land everywhere, being stuck all day at the foot of Ararat, sensing the stress of the lovely people under the Shah's dark cloud, the exquisite hospitality, the ancient relaxed dance of village life, so many things.
The environment of course changed drastically crossing into Afghanistan, but the feeling was the same. In those times we could never have imagined the grievous realities and schemes of ruination that exist today.
Thanks, praises, and respects to all here who uphold the power of love.
Hey Bho! Thank you. Did you get to see the story of Crow Alley? http://deepintoartlifewestgallery.blogspot.com/2011/07/dont-marry-technique_27.html
How fortunate you were to have seen the real country beyond Tehran, a wild and crazy city, a stupifyingly wonderful mashup of knock-off westernization with Winstoon billboards and the real culture in their ancient silver market with its wandering goats, tiny cars carrying four generations zig zagging all over the roads, nothing is what it seems. Isfahan was the height of the journey.
And now to have seen in those photos what you saw in person makes it so much worse that the western culture once emulated is the culture who will blow it all to smithereens with WW3 triggering it with them over classic Wetiko bs. "We can have ... but you may not have." Surely, that is nowhere near the real story.

Aaahhh, those "happy hour perches" (grin)!
May I give a heads up here to your new vid? Its too good to keep to random viewing. I will of course defer to your posting it on your blog where it actually belongs.
Ummm, you mean this one?
I guess so, but only if you point out that a)ya have to give me slack 'cause it's not my usual 'thing', and b)please first read the description of why I posted it, and c)headphones/good speakers are helpful.
Oh well, guess I covered it [big twisted humble grin].

So many requirements!
Yes, that is THE one indeed. Oooooo so cool, so lovely to see and so good for the ears/heart/soul.
"...As Socrates is supposed to have said when his students were urging him to save himself from execution, "Why should I fear death, I have not experienced it yet."
This is very good Bran, this means fear of death is based on what it appears to be, not what it is. It also testifies to the power of suggestion. Thank you.

neil, it IS a remarkable work, isn't it. I was especially charmed with the animation of textures. It catches the eye so that details are more obvious.
I read a very interesting book by G. Gordon Liddy. Autobiography called "Will." He said that as a child he got frustrated because he was such a wuss. (Paraphrasing.) So he made a list of all his fears and systematically confronted each one. Fascinating story, fascinating man.
My take on him is that he was so interested in the "action" of combat and the process of self-improvement through discipline and training that he wasn't so interested in "vetting" the moral standards of the forces he joined up with to pursue his passion for "action."
It stayed with me all night Nina and I have woken up with it in the morning,,,

In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1:4:2, is a description of fear: dvitiyat vai bhayam bhavati : “Fear comes when there is duality.” What is meant by duality? It means “you and me,” “the world and me,” “creation and me”; in other words it means separation. Whenever there is separation, there is a chance of comparison and competition. This leads to fear.
Duality is an illusion. We are like different waves in the ocean. One wave might be tall, one small, yet all are born in the lap of the ocean. Once we accept unity beyond multiplicity, we will never have anything to fear.
In the Bhagavad Gita (16:1), it is stated “ To live with peace, love, happiness, and joy, without any type of fear, is right living. ” In the same verse, fearlessness is mentioned as the first and foremost character of a person seeking truth.
In the Bible (John 8:32), Jesus said, “You should know truth and the truth will set you free.” Thus, sincere commitment to realize truth is the first step to becoming free from fear. We need to open our hearts and minds to receive knowledge from all around. Our inner and outer lives need to be truthful and sincere. Only the knowledge of truth has the capacity to free us from the iron grip of fear.
In our mantra of Do No Harm, that includes doing no harm to ourselves.
neil.. ...I suppose at the end of the day as humans we have no other choice other than to face fear,...
Remember to go to the root of whatever fear is taking place. When the root cause is undeniably clear to you, you will see the truth, know it is the truth, and the fear vanishes. And if the cause is something you did, YOU have to take full responsibility and lay it all out. After that, there is nothing to fear.
Thank you Brian, I'd never thought to read Liddy's story, but you made it sound so interesting, I will pick it up this week at the used bookstore and get back to you on it.

I am in love with used bookstores. My favorite one doubles as a pet rescue. They let you read and feed you healthy sweets. No fear there.

When I was in grade school we did an exercise of looking up the definitions of words and writing them down. I loved it because I loved words and knowledge through words. It was a hopeful process, I could feel my mind growing and my power increasing through acquisition of words. One day I got an idea I felt really excited about. I would look up the definition of definition--the puppy would catch its tail and I would get/intuit the meta-secret of the entire dictionary! I would contact the power at the heart of the book which would move me to a different level of understanding! Of course I was disappointed, the definition turned out to be circular, some synonyms only. Shit!
It is interesting to look at the activity of fearing fear. I have long hoped to make myself immune to fear--out of fear, really! So these practices of being willing to feel fear to the core seem like a better, non-conflicted approach to the matter, to the extent that such a thing can actually be done as a practice directed by "the will," which I don't really think I can actually do it at the core level. It is kind of an interesting sticky wicket. I think I am a subscriber to the theory that the Guru "crosses you over" in the context of a devotional relationship in which instead of resisting yourself you forget yourself. Of course I am aware that such an opinion is taboo, and fraught with all kinds of outrages and difficulties, but we are just talking here so it's no big deal, "nothing to be afraid of," hahaha!
Another grade school story--back in that time for me, in the fifties, there was a little guy, Paul, in my class who had a heart problem. He could not run at recess, he had to take it easy because he had been born with a hole in his heart, and if he tried to run he might die. So one week, Paul was absent on Monday and we were asked to pray for him (Catholic school) because he was going to have heart surgery and it was very dangerous for him and he might not survive the operation. This threat of real death cast a dreadful pall over the classroom and was scary to everyone, certainly to me. That was the same week that we started to learn how to do long division, which I found to be a very disagreeable ordeal. A couple of days later we were told that Paul had died. I looked at his empty desk with mixed feelings. On the one hand, it was a stark vision of sudden interruption of "the world" and transition into the unknown. At the same time I thought, because of the doctrines I had been taught were true, "Paul has died
and now he has seen God and he knows everything, whereas I am still here struggling with long division." I found myself feeling envious of Paul. Part of me wanted to die too. He had passed through what must have been a terrifying ordeal but now he was in the clear. Wow! Poor little sickly Paul had just blown past everyone, even all the adults! Pretty cool!
Fear? Is it not so that we talk about how to handle fear, how to master fear or how to deal with fear. We are seldom in a space where we can envision a world where fear is not an issue and it is simply not there. That would be wonderful.
I saw three promising glimpses this week. Yes I know, the General Assembly, yuck! The speech by Ahmadinejad was excellent.
I don't know if he is a good man or bad, but he said things that resonated. Read the words.
Then, in Syria, some of the rebels are laying down weapons saying that bloodshed and violence is not the way to go.
Japan may scrap the wale hunt this year - their boats are too old.
Perhaps this, what we are doing to ourselves and the earth, is just becoming too old.
Then, when I was thinking on these things, I read a Gordon Duff article, and he ends with : "Sometimes these little signs of sanity and human dignity, mankind showing the smallest signs of awakening, sometimes these things are rays of hope. "
Nicely said amarynth and Brian and scrap or anonymous,,,everybodys right I would say,,,,

Don't give yourself away.
Work quietly on your weaknesses,
develop a reserve and mystery,
be organized and self-sufficient,
and keep your life to yourself.
Consume less, stay in control,
be one with your inner self and nature.
Purifying your life, constantly skimming, cleaning,
throwing things out, simplifying.

Amarynth, his speeches and writings put us to shame. He is fearless and never gives up in spite of the obscenely deplorable reception he gets. It is heartbreaking. But he always comes back with his soul intact.
Amarynth, all systems get old at some point. The trick is to change them gradually, adding something more to the point as you go along. The problem with the current "getting old" zeitgeist is no one with power has any idea or interest in how to make those Zen moves. They just drone along in their same old evil flight paths chronicling progress where none exists.

New post up: http://deepintoartlifewest.blogspot.com/2012/10/parades-of-hope-against-backdrop-of-fear.html
neil, its neither. It isn't a process that I'm aware of. Its more a collection of experiences that reach a point I feel it important to say something that is sympathetic to everyone who is experiencing the same things.
