Being a snow day (holiday), there won't be any painting, everyone is home, big dog indoors doing figure 8's around the sofa, Fireteacher posting on the blogs alternating with some fix-its and the light is weak. I came across a few sites I'd like you to see if you have not already. Begin with Charles's The U.S. Status Quo: Unsustainable, Doomed and Danced Out:
...it is certainly striking that the two products chosen more or less at random were both complete wastes of money and time.
Added together with millions of similarly defective/low-quality/useless goods, this is malinvestment on a vast scale.
Add in the granite countertops in millions of falling-apart McMansions, empty malls, vacant highrises, hundreds of needless "profit center" MRI machines, etc. and we have a nation which has misinvested trillions of dollars which are now lost to productive investment elsewhere.
No economy can recover from this scale of malinvestment ...
... I am reminded of the Beatles' song I, Me, Mine. Perhaps that will be the anthem of the next decade as everyone scrambles to protect their swag and perquisites at the expense of some other less politically adept group of citizens, until the entire system freezes up and the dancers suddenly notice the music stopped playing a long time ago.
From there, you'll be of a mind to check out Justin Raimondo's Rachel Maddow, McCarthyite, the FBI, the left and the war on "extremism:
...there is a sinister aspect to all this violence-baiting, as well as a comic one. For the central point of all the pro-FBI, pro-government, anti-"extremist" propaganda blaring from MSNBC and other news outlets is to convince us that speech leads to violence – and that, indeed, certain forms of political speech – "antigovernment" in nature – are inherently violent. The irony of this is that these people are cheerleaders for the biggest most powerful purveyor of violence on earth, the US federal government. All states are founded on violence, of course, and maintained in power by the continual threat of it, and yet the US government enjoys a special status in this regard, with more firepower at its command – and the inclination to use it – than any previous empire in human history. We are talking about a government currently waging two open wars and one "secret" one, abroad – systematically murdering many thousands – and actively threatening yet another.
The tiny and powerless Hutaree "militia" has about as much chance of overthrowing this Leviathan as a flea. Yet they are charged with "sedition." This would be a joke if it weren’t such a danger to what’s left of our civil liberties. ...
Next, it seems to me that long essays on this blog are supreme time swallowers and am going to be testing out a less consuming approach of brief mentions, more frequently. This would be a mirror to Ran's style, but when there is a need, I claim the right to revert. Likely, we'll end up with both. Today is a good example of what to expect.
Next, but on topic: How will all those people who built homes since NAFTA went into effect in 1992 know where their drywall was created? The Feds say if you have a home with Chinese drywall, it has to be gutted. And who pays for that?
Lastly, in reflection on the Easter weekend busy news, let me close with a mention there really is such a person as a Papal Preacher. A Papal Preacher (loose cannon) that thinks the public response to the (pure evil) sexual molestation scandal is anti-semitism. The Pope's personal Papal Preacher was made to apologize after the outrage hit the airwaves, but who really knows what goes on deep inside someone's secret mind or inside the Holy See?
Since all of us are subjected to the passage of time in years designated A.D. and B.C., you'll begin to get an idea of how powerful is organized religion by thinking a bit on that. How different it would all be if that power never got its grip so long ago.
Awful layout problems persist for some unknown reason. Will continue to work on it.

Wow I feel like the first kid in line for tickets to the concert--I get to comment first? Now my palms are getting sweaty, whew, this is pressure--can I say something profound?
No, but I do want to thank Nina for referencing my Wal-Mart experience.
As for violence-baiting--I keep trying to make the connection between the antiwar movement of the 60s and 70s and current rumblings of resistance, be they Tea Party types or others: the State would love for you to become violent, since the State holds a monopoly on violence ands it knows how to deal with that form of resistance. What it does not know how to deal with is financial resistance/opting out/self-reliance. It desperately needs the citizenry to be beholden to the Savior State so they will be compelled to do its bidding.
Suppressing resistance provides the State a stage to show its "effectiveness" even as the status quo crumbles around us. The State crushing resistance is always good theater and TV--recall the Chicago 68 riots. Very profitable for the media, a great sideshow....
word verification: bousto. Sounds like an Italian aperitif. "Je voudrais deux bousto s'il vous plait..."
What part did sweaty palms and butterflies in the stomach play in natural and unatural selection? Broadcasting scent and warnings from the viscera?
Settling and taking stock of kit.
Alcohol burners and stands ok.
Minimum stainless cookware ok.
Wood and etc toolkit ok. Joseph took care of my machette all these years.
Internet and cellie aok.
Solar, tent and etc on the way.
Good protein, carbs and fats a challenge.
Prepared planting space for trees. Lawyer and surveyor to be visited and payed to get title issued. I'll camp when I know all is ok. Meantime in the hills overlooking the Caribbean Sea, carving, planting and keeping in touch with the tribes and families.
Look forward to being able to invite Y'All. It'll be tent and supply your own water initially. Working out solar incineration of body wastes. Tastefully.
Time will tell.
Later, turey.
'pins-es-si' and matches under the fingernails ok too? Incinerate and torture once....?
Does said Papal Preacher get butterflies and wet palms?
He should.
Uncle Tony and a host of burnt, stretched, broken, robbed and raped want to know.....why?
Will tell about Antonio Maduro around the real campfire. I may be open and strong enough to play the moments when the flames stripped his skin in Coimbres, Portugal few centuries ago.
For following the Laws of Moses.
On my sweet old Suzuki classic with extra hard strings for the extra hard expressions.
Charles, you're welcome, you so perfectly equate your Wal*Mart experience to the bigger picture. What has happened is the real pandemic, not something able to be inoculated against with unsold vaccines.
This pandemic is a mold growing inside the body of humanity. At some point (I'm imagining a Charles graph) everything converges and caves into itself. We can't be far from that state when a dysfunctional colander and threadbare socks, formaldehyde building products, mercury in vaccines, melamine in pets' foods, e-coli in ours, stripmining the commoners, etc., etc., etc., is the norm. The portrait that comes out of all these issues is classic Dorian Grey. When we are ill, it could be from anything - its a guess now. Was it the food, the medicine, the air or the water, the sheets or the shampoo?
Recently, I opened a brand new pack of glycerin soap and there was only half a bar inside. Your writing thankfully halts the personal paranoia that could come from feeling as if we are just unlucky souls dumped on by unscrupulous industry.
And the violence baiting ... this is how to bring on martial law. Word is out about too much, the quickest way to reroute Peakmongering and continue imperial BAU is to shut down the noise.
Obviously, there is no other plan because all the plans out there are corrupt or have shown themselves malleable to greater corruption. Imagine that? We can be the best little survialists alive and still wake up to jackboots at 3 am. Opting out doesn't change that possibility.
I'm accepting that a half bar of soap (holes in socks) is inevitable in this climate rather than get all worked up and bring in Blackwater. I still remember Kent State, Rodney King, riots in Black Grove and don't like the crush of frightened crowds. But the obesity epidemic of immediate gratification shows us that a lot of other people don't have the patience or awareness of consequence to put up with it.

Thank you for breaking the ice Charles!
turey, I hope you can continue to post here as you become more deeply assimilated into your Ital lifestyle. You might have found the only safe space possible. When I was last in a similar zone, it seemed the entire load of our problematic world grew smaller until it disappeared, and there it was just one human in tune with the Universe. You certainly deserve that and more. Recall it was only a few months ago you were stoking the fires at the New Shangri-La forum? My, my.
Thanks Nina.
If these experiences can inspire or warn, I'll continue to share them.
To have been expelled by elements of one family and welcomed by another, here, means much to me.
Sunrising, strong already. Easy to forget why the old ones would retreat from the sun between 11'ish and 4'ish. Remember mad dogs and Englishmen! Getting lots of Vit D.
Got soursop seeds. Found deep bush boots, big cast iron 3 foot pot and some stashed old. Trying to get my hosts old solar water heater together. Huge collector, water may boil.
Bat ear black puppy is adopting me. I decided no attachments after the previous but am still 'dog puppa'.
Shoulda kept my locks, that sun heats the neck fast.
Later, turey.
thank you for this. of all your readers, i probably am the only one here as a conservative refugee.
I have been astounded at how many people have been okay with expansion of executive powers under Obama that they would have bitterly protested under Bush. and that suddenly it is okay to start rounding up people on pre-crimes and thought crimes. its seriously creepy and unnerving and it makes me feel hopeless. but i cant allow myself to feel hopeless as that is their goal.
It hurt, and badly, when i finally came around to see just how dark TPTB's in charge are. evil isnt a word i throw around for effect much, its applied very judiciously. but now it is the only word that fits.
i was thinking of taking an ad/min art job here until i read CHS's piece. man, there is no more important work than that garden. i was sort of back sliding again into needing stuff and needing to finance getting that stuff - but now - no way. i'll have to figure it out some other way. what i need is to keep my spirit and humanity in tact. i do not NEED hardie plank.
the header image for today is a beautiful commentary. and the barely readable title. great design nina.
Thank you Chickory. You are so thoughtful to mention the headers. I have a laptop that I can move the screen a little, back or forward and the title changes as I do so from grey on black to black on grey, its vaguely interactive.
Definitely, staying out of their clutches is survival. Good move. It is hard not to fall for the subliminal hype, I know, but just think of it as noise from a whorehouse up the road and not for you. Lock that gate. Our personal lives are not a soup kitchen for stripminers.
Rasta, just get a cap from some nice daughter's crochet art and make it your comb. Little boy locks will probably look very cute on you. Yes, that new family must be so grateful for your help, one hand wash the other.
See? The Forces spoke. Maybe that is why you are being adopted, too. One good soul warms to another good soul.
There is a reason for everything, in your case is just more obvious. Soon write to G. No matter what you say in your letter, he will be amused.
VW: djure - one day at a time builds a lifetime of being in the now.
Chickory, please take the job if that works for you right now--most of us need some income because complete self-sufficiency is almost impossible (although Turey sounds like he is getting close--congratulations and kudos for all you do and for playing the extra-hard strings).
I have been mulling an article in the latest Scientific American by Bill McKibben. It made me realize that we have lost an "ecology of production" (others also use that same term) for anything other than the status quo. So without an entire ecology to fit into, it's impossible to just up and quit "the system" until we've somehow slowly assembled a self-supporting ecology with is largely independent of the status quo. I reckon that means small things like buying stuff from the local gardener/farmer and paying someone to fix our bicycles if we are doing other work, etc. I'm not sure how else to create a community which isn't dependent on Corporate American crap from China.
charles,
that was wrong of me to lay that at your feet. what i meant is that your writing, and ninas and others, help me to focus on what are my motivations for making such a choice. is it because i desire to do the work because it satisfies me? no! it was because i need money. but it would require me being gone all day, 9-5 and weekends too -possibly lots of evenings. which means the hens have to be cooped, the dogs inside, the garden? not enough. and art? forget it. it wont happen. ive been here before. i get scared, and give up.
and then there is a board of directors to answer to.
i just have to try and get more paintings before people and work the farm market and see if i cant better develop my internet shop.
ive been blogging for some local businesses and that is a possible path.
so charles, you were right. im opting out of the structure. and i agree with you. non participation in commerce with big box and giant agri is the way to go. i just delivered a pro bono piece : a poster for the farmers market. i can happily support local commerce and local food.
The portrait that comes out of all these issues is classic Dorian Grey..._Nina
I bow to your precision of thought. Been out of town tending family issues. Will catch up later. Superior insight here so far in comments.

Thank you. Here I thought it was in the common vernacular.
We are eager to hear you lastest chapters. You could save me having to ask you if you just gave us a nightly report. When you have access and are of the mind to do so, of course.
VW: reclig - stoploss for peg legs.
The more I shut out the noise machine the happier I am. That means no t.v., no radio, no canned music, limited runs on the computer. I'm staying with my mother in a rather cramped space and that's ok for a bit longer. In the meantime I'm working with the transition community locally. Mostly by helping with an organic garden project and doing some bicycle promotion stuff. Still dealing with the pains of the flesh.
Mostly the universe is beating into my flesh how much more stuff we have than we truly need. I'm not talking tools, I'm talking useless crap; clutter. All this garbage is sold by garbage stores to go along with garbage services. Brought home to crappy buildings that leak from bad roofs onto cracked foundations where broken families watch porn on flatscreen televisions.
We are desperate for quality and we keep getting quantity.
Here's a clip of the crew I roll with doing a Bike Music Festival. A brief glimpse of me @ 2:36 powering the show. 2010 Bike Music Festivals, Chico June 5th, San Francisco June 19th, others TBA. Start one in your town. Be the quality.
Turey_A friend is a man who will keep your machete in good shape for ten years while you wander the world. He could use it every day and grind the blade down. He could toss it in a corner and let it rust. He could lend it to a neighbor and forget to fetch it back. You are truly blessed.
v'word: carfl....... and car-free
Thanks Charles, my first kudos. Nina 'greats' me and gives me 'Ras'. I'm having the time of my life following my heart and navigating the curves and rapids with common sense and gut feel, maybe I'll experience prayer too, never knew who/what to address. Yea, anxieties and uncertainties are always hovering. I do not have to invite them in.
I see many living on begging and their wits. Minimum fossil fuels and no number/cards but maybe a birth certificate lodged deep in our archives. The stresses make this unnacceptable....cut off from the system but quality absent.
Exactly Pangolin, the whole thing bypasses/ignores quality. Sure, top craftspeople hold the fort there and charge accordingly. Blips on the screen of the $ counters; quantifiers, more is better. Then there is the remnant quality stuff, the old things that remind us of slow, careful and graceful.
To Kingston today. My old town.
Later, turey.
'to-t-url' thanks Word Prophet, will try it later.
Here's an apocalyptic estate sale. Amazing how the human instinct to stash things away for a rainy day can morph into the addiction to hoard completely useless Christmas dolls, evil Mickey Mice, etc.!
If one has collector mania, best to channel it sensibly Publius.
They should have put their $ into good early Greek gold and silver, a couple pieces of rare early American silver and a piece of super rare early 18th C West Indian furniture, useable and still smelling of slavery and pirates.
I'm tools now. Any good 'old' that comes by too natch. It's everywhere here. Just have to tune in the eyes and gut instinct.
Planted first seeds.
Kingston hot and a drought on. Not many smiling faces. Maybe at the watering holes after work.
Then, I've been away for years. The stressors change and the old guard becomes senile or loose their rush from playing power. Others are always waiting to have a turn.
Best, turey.
Nice blog.
Do you feel there is any hope?
http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/?page_id=9798
Hi Mick, welcome. I try not to "believe" or hope, but survive within the framework of what is. Belief and hope are tools inspiring false desire. In this way, I'd have to say there is no hope. Hope will forever remind me of John Edwards campaign slogan - Hope is on the way.
Aren't you in Ireland?
