Do No Harm

This past week's community slanderfest is probably not over, just in remission until someone else picks it up.  Therefore, the following lesson is particularly appropriate when considering New World Thug Behavior and Carelessness.  Much gratitude goes to Scrapwood for sending in the 59 Lojongs.  It will go on the left sidebar in the Free NeverOverdue Library shortly so you will have immediate access to all 59 teachings and the preliminaries.

"... The Mind-Training Slogans, #31

Each Friday, Acharya Judy Lief, teacher in the Shambhala tradition of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, comments on one of Atisha's 59 mind-training (Tib. lojong) slogans, which serve as the basis for a complete practice.

Atisha (980-1052 CE) was an Indian adept who brought to Tibet a systematized approach to bodhicitta (the desire to awaken for the sake of all sentient beings) and loving-kindness, through working with these slogans. Judy edited Chogyam Trungpa's Training the Mind (Shambhala, 1993), which contains Trungpa Rinpoche's commentaries on the lojong ("mind-training") teachings.

#31. Don't malign others

When we malign someone, our intention is to cause harm. Our words are spiteful and ill-spirited. There is a saying that “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” But in fact words do have power and they certainly can hurt.

In working with the slogans, we are working not only with our actions, but with what is behind them. For instance, when we say something, we should ask ourselves why we are saying it, and for what purpose. Will what we say help the situation or not? Are we trying to connect with someone or get rid of them? Are we trying to help them or to destroy them? Or maybe we are talking just to talk, to fill the space because we are uneasy with the silence.

If we need to malign others to make us feel good about ourselves by comparison, we will never feel all that great. And at the other extreme, when we encounter people who are exceptional, that approach will make us feel pathetic in comparison. According to this slogan we should stop that whole destructive approach.

Not maligning does not mean that we do not notice differences in people. It does not mean that we should not recognize people’s hateful or destructive attitudes and weaknesses when we encounter them or that we should not speak up. Everything does not just become a mush. But when we see other people’s problems without encumbering our perception by the need to prop up our own insecure ego, we can respond more directly and appropriately. By stopping the habit of maligning, not only will we do less harm to others, but we will also begin to free ourselves from the need for such props.

Today’s practice
Pay attention to your speech and to how you talk about and to other people.  What is the difference between speaking critically and using speech to harm or to destroy? ..."

I  would rather, any day, be thought naive rather than publicly slander another, especially when that person is already down, battling demons no one can dispel but themselves.  I wish I were naive sometimes, ignorant of the viciousness that can arise when expectation and motive are shredded in the bright light of reality.  Naive to the increasing overtone of violence rocking our world off its axis every single day, every hour, somewhere, blind to the immediate flare of tempers feeling wronged by whomever, wanting whatever.  If you look at these situations closely, you would find there are always two elements at the root of conflict, one is of course, money, the other, credibility. The belief systems accompanying our existence in western culture encourages the value of those two elements exponentially to the point that all most people are exposed to is violent in its nature and always disastrous in result.  It does not have to be this way, it never did.  As Ran Prieur quoted on the idiocy of property ownership and John of Survival Acres presented in his essay on food production being at the root of all civilizations, both break down the walls of perception of why vicious conflict, bloodletting, enslavement, abject penury, injustice and arsenals of weaponry never had to be the roadmap to food security, peace, satisfaction and freedom.  In fact, we should be aware by now, our quickly depleting world seems to be composed of frivolous thug-appeal, violent "advancements" against humanity at large principally for the expansion of wealth among the already wealthy, i.e.; more food and property than can possibly be consumed by offspring of offspring.  In the present, it is trusted more than ever, violence is the only means to continue the atrocious, hideous charade.  As it stands now, this ongoing tragedy ends only when we die.  There has always been a better way for mankind to survive.  The reason Thug World thrives is violence is expedient, lacking clarity of thought and convenient, whereas exercising  intelligence and compassion for all beings requires love, that inconvenient marvel that always gets in the way of false desire.

We who seek awareness are on the right track for the most part, but it is evident the violence all around us is a highly contagious disease which is immunized against and blown away entirely with LOVE.

Ahaa ... it's going to be pure enjoyment to dive into the 59 Lojongs.

Such good and powerful words Nina.

The question that came up in contemplation this morning, was: "How does one lift into unconditional love without acceptance of that that is completely and unconditionally unacceptable?" The unconditional aspect of love to my thinking cannot include acceptance of the unacceptable and yeah, that is a incredibly sharp edge to balance on. There is not always the luxury to distance oneself from chopping wood and carrying water, in order that one can 'Zen' in more of an observer mode.

Some things, like abuse of children or war in the midst of children, are for me completely unconditionally unacceptable. The Zen path is different from others, say the John Lash application of the Gaia myth.

John Lash takes it from a different perspective and considers that in today's atmosphere, which you rightly call New World Thug Behavior, the Kalika warrior spirit must be willing to directly harm those that want to harm the warrior. This is a sacrificial aspect of Kalika warriorship and these short words do not do the topic justice because the love aspect shifts to a different dimension.

It is a massive topic. I remain intensely curious in terms of right action and right love. I have tentatively put forward to some that seemingly, in the age of New World Thug Behavior, something has shifted for us, in terms of right action and right love and its application.

The psychologist Victor Frankl (Logotherapy) in Man's Search for Meaning, suggests that what we seek: - is a life that has meaning under all circumstances, even the most miserable ones, - is that this is our main motivation for living, ie., to find meaning, - is that we have freedom to find meaning in what we do and experience and the stand that we take, even when faced with a situation of unchangeable suffering.

In the 59 Lojongs also seems to be a worthy worthy cause to examine deeply one's standing, in determining your kindness, and I add love to kindness here.

" ... Doing good deeds is fundamental—the path of the bodhisattva warrior is not just about talk, but about action. It is important to cultivate virtue, but it is not sufficient. Our attempts at virtue can become heavy-handed and distorted. We can go so far as to use the activity of kindness as a method of self-aggrandizement in the disguise of helping others. Even when our attempts at kindness are not distorted, trying to do the right thing can be wearing. It is a struggle.

... underlying the entire list of slogans is the ground of absolute bodhichitta, which makes all the difference. For with this ground, or nonground, the basis for distorted kindness is removed, or at least lessened.

I should spend a few hours to make this easier to digest, but anyway .. here's to understanding without editing.

That's perfectly fine Amarynth, I'm glad you did. For example, this statement is very important: "We can go so far as to use the activity of kindness as a method of self-aggrandizement in the disguise of helping others."

I call that hijacking the soul or soul theft and when the crime is permitted by the victim, he can be said to have sold his soul. All it is abuse, as if the pretense of kindness and "helping" (the pattern intentionally unrecognized by the "helper") is actually directed by motive of possession and in that particular possession exists the perception of control which is power.
An historical game and wildly popular to this day. It always ends badly because when given away, the soul comes back to haunt us through guilt.

Offers of money, gifts, trinkets, drugs, can do this as well as irrational promises bloating false expectations which leads to, yes, violent behavior on the part of all who participate in the game.

this technique, of repeating slogans, is a type of mind control.

it is also a form of thought control, as it disallows a person from pursuing blacklisted thought process.

it is dangerous. at any time, you could get ahold of something that is not beneficial.

while negative or aggressive tendencies are generally regarded as evil, or destructive, an overly passive attitude promotes an atmosphere where true evil can flourish.

further, there is a survival urge that is basic, that requires aggressive action, in order to maintain the species.

it's nice to take a Panglossian view of life, as it is easier, but the heavy lifting of serious acquisition of knowledge is never easy.

Our post was to meant to share a gift if the 59 Lojongs, comment on the growing violence, touch on a recent example of violence (abuse) online that is familiar to many of my readers, and thoughts on how violence originates and how it can be prevented. Four topics. actually.

Mind control is wanted and needed for spiritual progress.

Just as water is wanted and needed for physical progress.

Clean thoughts, mantras and prayers are wanted and needed. Spiritually required.

Clean water is wanted and needed. Physically required.

Lust causes frustration.
Frustration causes anger.
Anger causes violence.

The example of the chariot is perfect.

Horses = senses

Reins = mind

Driver = intelligence

Passenger = spirit soul

If a person doesn't learn (intelligence) to control the mind (reins) to control the ever lusting senses, (horses) then the spirit soul passenger (the real you), along for the ride, is sure to be run over the cliff by those out of control chomping at the bit senses. Kali yuga world is one big chariot constantly running off the cliff.

You really do get what you desire. Everyone does.

Mind is best friend or worst enemy. Our choice.

Exactly as Krishna said to Arjuna after all was said and done, after the Gita was sung to him.

"Now you choose"

I tried searching for a link, Katz, but apparently all the message boards on AOL were shut down last year. Just after 911, there were some excellent thinkers making great points on two forums in particular, the Think Tank and Are We at War?, but every time someone got too close to something important, an AOL monitor would come in and remove the posts. Everybody moved on, of course.

Life has loveliness to sell,
All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children's faces looking up,
Holding wonder like a cup.

Life has loveliness to sell,
Music like the curve of gold,
Scent of pine trees in the rain,
Eyes that love you, arms that hold,
And for your spirit's still delight,
Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,
Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been, or could be.

Divine love is deep, thus divine intelligence is uniting everything. According to the GAIA hypothesis, beings on the mother earth share one planetary consciousness. Living things and matter are connected, and together form one big life. Would you throw your garbage from your car window if you knew you were throwing garbage on yourself? Would you treat anyone or anything less than kindly if you knew you were being unkind to yourself? Would it be ok to gossip about someone or engage in blame or hate if you understood it was you that you are hurting? That is how you understand KARMA. Everything you do physically and energetically returns to you. There is no way to escape your oneness. So many people are unhappy, felling less than, victimized, or just plain outraged, because they don't understand that all the power lies within them. We/they are one with everything. That means all you have to do is expand your awareness of yourself to include everything that is. When you make the shift from separateness to oneness you heal yourself and the world. It seem to me that one shift could make all the difference in the world, and that shift is to realize and therefore look for the oneness of everything. Being one with life is being one with right now this moment. You then realize that you don't live your life, but life lives you. Life is the dancer, and you are the dance.

All differences in this world are of degree and not of kind, because oneness is the secret of everything.

Now, the root of health is the mind-and-heart and all life factors and experiences originate from there. If the mind-and-heart is pure, the body is pure. So, if you get sick, don’t look for a cause outside, but rely on the innate powers of your own body and self to recover. This reality applies equally to human beings and animals; if animals can recover from diseases relying on their own powers, so can people.

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.

"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Deep emotional scarring comes I suppose from the stagnation of unhealed emotional wounds, that seem to be everywhere this Kali Yuga
But like all wounds it can be healed,,,
The wound only really appeared as a provocation to the inherant healing process,,

Unconditional love I suppose is really understanding,,not intellectual understanding but deep emotional understanding,,

When I have seen people acting out of unconditional love, there is a surge of electrical current moving through me,,also if I act from it too,,,,

I know that's idealistic and stuff,,
But for a golden period on earth we must imagine it,,
We must dream it into being,,,

The churches have told the people to turn the other cheek,,,(to not care) to forget about ,,,,,
And render unto Caesar what is Caesars,,,
Which if you look at it,,is nothing at all,,nothing is rightfully Caesars or the governments,,,
They only held those positions, both Caesar and the government on the basis of trust,,,,,
Which there is none now
So that situation can not go on
So now we have a western population rendering unto Caesar, and when Caesar wants more and physically takes more,a large portion of society is turning the other cheek,,

No, not crazy at all. Sounds like truth.
One thing to keep in mind about unconditional love is judgement has no role in the program. We are not judges and even judges are not judges, there is only one judge and we are loved unconditionally. In fact, the whole story of standing at the pearly gates is just more (corral the slaves with fear) fffing dogma.

Oh dear. I am a person who has been given to resorting to vulgar gestures and name-calling as a personal response to evilness as I see it. It also is a basis for much of my humor. I admit to using terms such as "asshat," "mutants," "wetigos," "morons," "minions," "scum bags," "pimps," "tools," "miscreants," "nozzles," and "douchebags" in my personal lexicon. I don't imagine that I will be giving these terms up anytime soon. That's just me.

HOwever, I do find myself re-thinking the term "sheeple," in reference to those who seem to be unaware of what is going on and who tend to "go along to get along" in this warped, mass-media train wreck of a culture in which we find ourselves. I find myself having more compassion for the many differing ways that each of us connects the dots and puts together our personal take on reality, depending on our unique perspectives.

More and more, I believe that there is not one right way of thinking or of doing things. I believe that we are all one, in terms of our collective humanity and our energetic influence on each other. We are all connected. Our thoughts and our words are powerful. But, just as an organism has different types of cells (kidney cells, nerve cells, muscle cells, etc.) each is different, but each provides a function that is necessary for the organism to live and function as a whole.

I have faith that if each of us was able to reject the programming that requires us to conform to someone else's idea of what is appropriate, and be driven instead by our innate true natures, all would be well. We'd all be doing what is right for ourselves, and as we do that, we'd be doing what is right for the whole. It would be fascinating to see what really is our true potential as a species.

Perhaps the folks formerly known as "sheeple" provide the muscle that do the work of production, family life, etc. They will follow and carry much of the load of whomever is in charge. They don't need to be the brain cells. Historically, only about 7 percent of the people have been the leaders. But, we still need followers to get anything accomplished. So, I have decided to stop calling them names and give them more respect and love.

I admit it's a baby step. At this rate, it's going to take me more than one lifetime to get where I am headed to.

I'm with you Neil.

But I also see what others have posted here. There still is a balance somewhere. I won't stop calling out evil while deeply searching for, and sometimes finding, the sacred.

Perhaps we are quite unschooled in terms of the differences in sorcery, and in magic. Both can accomplish similar things but it is only in the magical realm that we find the sacred.

"Man becomes aware of the sacred because it manifests itself, shows itself, as something wholly different from the profane... something sacred shows itself to us... something of a wholly different order, a reality that does not belong to our world, in objects that are an integral part of our natural "profane" world."

It is most urgent that you seek real, true perception and understanding, so you can be free in the world and not confused by ordinary spiritualists. It is best to have no obsessions. Just do not be contrived. Simply be normal. You impulsively seek elsewhere, looking to others for your own hands and feet. This is already mistaken.

Good question Am, I was about to ask the same thing. Who among us is dependent on another for their own spirituality?
Those that are, are not paying attention to our interior strength. And just why would someone do that? Because of one of gazillions of situations and items composing false desire.

Am I wrong, are not most of us here beyond that?

So thorough is the programming, we've yet to see how this works successfully for the long term, but the point is - what you have in mind makes perfect sense. I have always been at one with the logic of it. The worse things get, the more it becomes the only solution. Nothing less will do it.

Dogen

My quote was made as a general statement about meditation Am and not directed at you or anybody for that matter and reflects the same uncompromising nature seen in life. The above quote by Dogen says it a bit better and relates to the unity of the heart/mind. The Buddha meditated for six years, Bodhidharma for nine. The practice of meditation is not a method for the attainment of realization—it is enlightenment itself.

Research has revealed that the heart communicates information to the brain and throughout the body via electromagnetic field interactions. The heart generates the body’s most powerful and most extensive rhythmic electromagnetic field. The heart’s magnetic component is about 500 times stronger than the brain’s magnetic field and can be detected several feet away from the body. It was proposed that, this heart field acts as a carrier wave for information that provides a global synchronizing signal for the entire body (McCraty, Bradley & Tomasino, 2004)

Our dear poet and friend Neil has passed away, unexpectedly on Friday.

I am beside myself with grief.

I have posted a tribute to him on my site, please visit and leave a comment in his memory:

Rest in Peace, Neil Rogers

Very happy for Neil, he has gone back to the real world. It is us who are still in the land of make believe on a distant rock stuck in a body where we hope we could make a difference on this planet of satanic degradation.

I don't know why but I have a feeling it is final exam time soon. The lucky ones have already booked a flight out. It is strange to me but 7 or 8 close friends have died lately. One checked out on super bowl sunday.

Not much could be done for this planet. You know I am sure there are billions of planets where physical life exists for those who are attached to such. Some of them are much better than this place and I am sure some are much worse. We don't want to fail our examination, discard our friends and betray them. To thine own self be true they say.

Dubs, you certainly put to rest that stupid saying "death comes in threes". In 2005 I lost my Mom, her brother, her sister, my father in law and my stepson - individually.
It is our nature to mourn, when we really look, all species seem to have this capacity for sadness when a tribe member moves on. As Pema Chodrun says, “Life is glorious, but life is also wretched. ..."
I think neil was too good for this planet. Too real, too humble, too compassionate. We will miss him always.

Each thing reveals the One, the One manifests as all things. To live in this Realization is not to worry about perfection or non-perfection. To put your trust in the Heart-Mind is to live without separation, and in this non-duality you are one with your Life-Source.

To you Neil
Perfect emptyness like a transparent sea

in his own words :

by neil rogers

mighty mighty my true friend
who see's above the clouds
the simple focused unifying
container of all sounds

pounding hearted rythms
energising up the way
where light shines through the darkness
love comes out to play

a sense of freedom whispers
the notes upon the flute
the truth will move a mountain
by essence of the root

the fruit of loving enterprised
reaching through beyond
like a river through the heart
where birds sing heavens song

..peace..
