What are we doing?

One day I just won't do this anymore. Call me a self-hating blogger. Considering the amount of time spent surfing during a typical week, my headstone will read "nina, Blogger", that is if I get a headstone vs. an Amadeus paupers' crater. And yet, that would not be a bad thing. It would be a terrible thing to be buried in steel and gilded plastic. AGHHHHH. The contents of such expensive, claustrophobic casing doesn't allow the body to break down naturally into the process required to complete the journey above ground as one rejoins with Mother Earth's system. How thrilling it would be to have memory during the process and find myself a lucky acorn fallen into some undisturbed pasture in wet weather. And equally as wonderful, to be carted away in a horse drawn wagon, clip clops in the mud on a dark rainy day. I hope to watch it pass in the mist.

We're right where they want us and we're doing what we're supposed to be doing, at home, with our valued family values and spoiled pets which have a cute way of being beloved boats with holes. We're watching a million channels of all corporate marketing models - all the time TV and pouring our angst into blogs on our breaks from the blitz. The calm before the storm? Not if you actually read entertainment newslinks as if the protagonist was your next door neighbor. You reported him, huh? Who goes to theaters anymore? The convenience culture has squeezed itself into a home appliance. An electric wok. Ah, you might put away that electric can opener sitting over there on your granite countertop (cough cough). Its a little much for more than a few fragile megachurch enthusiasts.

After a post has been up say, around four days, I'm doing something else - and why not? I know and you know there is something terribly unnatural with the totality of life consisting of technology. When I get busy with the new horse down the road, making friends and feeding carrots, its ludicrous to break away just to open up the plastic box again. There is no end to the things I can do around here, like pondering the sage.

I found out tonight that horse is named Chip. nice. He could have been my consort in a past life. An older Appie, his spots moved to his face and trunk as he matured. We'd been calling him Freckles. Those spots are Dalmation-like, my favorite pattern. This is a guy I can talk to. I am quite serious, he pulls the angry whinny thing if I don't visit daily. Here is how I got him on my friend list: I brought him some 3rd cut Timothy hay I keep around for my elder Guinea Pig. Its hot stuff, Alfalfa hay is about as exciting as it gets for horses, the hay I brought appears to have affected him like fresh Coconut water and herb would effect us.

There's been a lot of talk about California legalizing pot. Its made it to the voting ballot. Heh. You are free to interpret that cynical Heh any way you want. Prediction: In less than one decade, it will be as common as viagra ads, with similar concerns tranched inside the romance scene.

A few years ago, some officially sponsored hikers found what was officially claimed to be the official original sage in one of our biggest official southwest deserts, apparently it was massive and did what sages do, spawned seeds in a circle around itself which prompted all the spawned little sage-lings to sprout in the same fashion until a mammoth circular ocean of sage spread into the foothills and up and down the mountainsides. Now, millenia later, we have sage canyons and sage flanks. Sage is THE moisture stealer par excellence, more brittle and hardy than competing species, and usually wins the competition for water unless a bulldozer comes along and flattens the land for development which is known as disturbing the land. Disturbed land can be good, as in dozers carving out firebreaks in grassland, evacuation routes and encircling wildfires as parts of containment strategy. However, disturbed land also creates habitat for unwanted species, such as fire ants who have taken to building underground tunnels floating a pavement ceiling, curbs and man-made structures, i.e.; home slabs, barns and outbuildings, strip malls, whole towns, extended cities underneath cities and suburbs, exurbs all the way into out there, deep into fallow pastures and rugged terrain far from the elbowing crowds.

The squirrels enjoy every area where the ants haven't built, employing a similar system of underground connections including personal sleeping pods connected to the great room. They are equally as industrious as the ants. There is life moving around, building, foraging and populating just underneath a thin layer of dirt and vegetation, all of it in competition with each other for survival. We're not really counting the birds' nests in the grasses, but we are counting prairie dogs, moles, voles, mice and gophers, centipedes and other underground/burrowing species.

Peak oil and the financial collapse don't really matter to survival. Throughout the world there are some cultures who have never experienced the glories of the industrial revolution and at the rate they are being eliminated, they never will. Surely the Yanamano tribes of Rio Amazona and its tributaries are on the to-do list. Anyone and everything not enamored with debtors' fever and petro sludge and its by-products, is being annihilated if not by spills and blowouts, by takeover, or as in COIN, counter insurgency i.e.; merger/hostile takeover. If the Earth hangs on another century, Saudi Arabia has potential to be the last standing superpower running this show (perhaps they already possess that distinction? There are many good arguments for thinking that) with backup from Russia's and Bolivia's fresh water resources. So who are WE? What ARE we? These are bold, sweeping questions, but as usual, I'm not concerned with the day to day, tomorrow and tomorrow creeps at this petty pace political details, rather a bigger picture taking into account what really matters for humanity's survival, beyond convenience and the remote control weeding out of everything standing in the way of the reach of Corporatocracy. What happens on the ground is how it is, that much we're forced to divine on our own. Obviously, there is nothing we can do about it either, no matter how many online links to anthropogenic mass destruction, extinctions, slow death, displacement, loss of livelihood and morality's demise. As many of you have commented, "What can we do?" The Earth is never still, cycling through stages of development on a timetable of its own, of course this latest turn of events would come about, and we, along with all life, will adapt as we are doing without realizing it. We are not conscious of the movement of the Earth as we live upon it, either. Learning creates change, educated change and because we have so much occupying our minds, it seems barely noticeable, if at all. Try to keep in mind we are still coming out from under having our brains malfunctioned in Bizarro World. Nothing happens all at once - and something is always happening.

I didn't read the news today, oh boy. I don't feel like messing up the morning with catastrophic horrors and scary tea parties. The news is just more torture, designed to threaten and phobiatize readers. You get the feeling its a softening up the target as if EVERY ONE in a decision making capacity knows exactly what you know and manipulates fact to fit agenda so that fact is falsehood. Try justifying your way through that. Its not easy unless you are Thomas Cromwell, First Earl of Essex, or fortunate to have some out-of-the-blue, blessed sartorial moment of truth in which clarity of thought prevails. Until such a moment occurs, all of us live in a subliminally depressed state of partial awareness knowing some things, the remainder elusive. That we do not know more is guilt inducing in having placed trust in beliefs that show themselves to be wishful thinking. In times like this, it is comforting to bathe one's being in bolanath's grandmothers' healing Net of Light.

While pondering sage oceans it came to me the reason we fail as a species is buried guilt. "So what?" we say, guilt is for criminals who deserve and receive justice, end of story. This gets confusing because media's definition of guilt is reserved for those who commit acts of wrongdoing. Our language partnering with pundits has co-opted depth of analysis, for example, the concepts of justice and wrongdoing. When I think of those words, it always brings Shirley Jackson's short story, The Lottery (p. 1948) to mind. As long as white people harbor guilt, the lotteries of life continue, suspended in wait are the crowd pleasing stone throwers eager to bury their bredren. The Wahabbi stonings are just us, or the former us before self-education, out in front of the frosting and lace put on justice and wrongdoing. Since the western world carries mountains of buried guilt for having massacred, executed, tortured, threatened, renditioned, lied and stolen property throughout recorded history, the western majority cannot and will not tolerate the weight of that guilt and must dispose of those free from denial of stoning or distortion of intent and action. In other words, if you speak what you see, you are not tolerated because you are naming blame, not owning blame. The real blame then remains stuck in denial aka defense of imaginary concepts such as states, borders, rules on movement, being in love with ideas of division which have no basis in reality. One Love.

Into this world we are born, little sagelings thirsting for survival, spawning and sprouting our ways though time, a blink in the eye of our planet which somehow survives us, minimalizes us, we are Aborigines looking into the sky waiting for God's care package to this day.

Behind each seed a string of seemingly small, but meaningful actions taken, involuntarily, and worse, actions not taken at all, guilt builds for participation in the competition for survival in nothing more than an ego construct. It would help if we just dropped the pretense and spoke in semi-monosyllables, to ourselves and to the Universe. I'm sorry. I love you. I never wanted to hurt anything, nothing! The real wrongdoing here is how few get that AND live it. You think the SCOTUS can fix that with justice?

... All language is a system of symbology, that is, sounds strung together that mean something relating to the external reality we experience.

This symbology is unique to the individual person due to the fact that all of our individual experiences are normally unique events relating to the individual, with same exceptions. But, in almost all cases, the interpretation of those events will be different than other individuals sharing the event. This has been tested over and over again to the same conclusion. .... murph

The list of ego constructs grows in perfect proportion to humanity's helplessness. To acknowledge disingenuously or not to acknowledge at all is the greatest wrongdoing throughout history, our existence predefined for us, soap operatic in scope and lack of something real, where does one draw the line? Is anyone angry? Or, are our laptops the epitome of the addicts' compromise? Slowly, ever so gradually, we arrive at this point each in his own time. Tattered, torn, straddling the the chasm between the real and the great lie, we participate in slowing adaptation which spreads the guilt around enough to keep the big lie going, and growing, a little longer.

Very good, Nina. What's its? "I woke up, I saw, I read." I feel so sorry these days. Such a burden... beginning with the Gulf death, continuing with... and on and on.... Howdy Doody and Now.... The seven year old rosemary bush died, next to where we buried our 20yo cat. I talk to her as I prune, weed, harvest. "Do you miss the depression? Do you miss Obama's Lies? Do you miss what's coming down?" Of course Pitty never answers.

Extraordinary post. It is interesting to watch a wide variety of commentators arrive via different routes to the same conclusions.

P.S. I once owned a leopard app that was a wonderful horse; she would test me every time I rode her yet walk placidly around the ring with my four-year-old daughter on her.

who would have thought such a thing could happen 30 years ago.

thought i would share with you the latest in the cian court case thingie.
i call the constable in charge of the case to ask him the status of things. he informs me that the prosecutor has pointed out that they had made several mistakes and it is bound to get thrown out of court. so of course i celebrate. something i do all the time.
then on tuesday night he calls to inform me that the court case is the next morning. and i say hey you told it was thrown out and now i have not got legal representation.
so he says well you can reserve your right to not attend.
so in situations like this i hand it over to the universe and i pick up a wooden dice. if the numbers land on 2,4 or 5 then we will go, if it lands on the others than we won't . so it lands on 5. we go.
the prosecutor snarls at me from his chair. there was no good first impression. maybe it had something to do with the flowing indian robes i was wearing - who knows. he tells me whilst salivating that child services need to do an interview and even if they say withdraw the decision is still up to him.
the air in his office is pungent and there is an overwhelming urge to escape. i try and focus on the breathing and staying calm but this man is not in my league. he is not like anyone i have met before.
and i say but hey the weight of the evidence is 0.00 grams, yes well he snorts, evidence is evidence.
i am then sent upstairs to child welfare. again cian and i are sitting in this institutional passage with the windows that have not been washed since apartheid ended.
finally we are called in.
and the head of the department is the twin of the prosecutor. no doubt about it.
he starts speaking to us in a proverbial leader kind of a fashion and i ask him to speak english. in his position he would have to be bilingual but he says no he can't speak the language. and he turns to a woman at his desk and hands over.
again the attention goes to the breath. in, out, presence.
and she smiles. goes through three pages of questions and then asks me if i intend to sue the police force. she says i am entitled to but she does not recommend it. and then she tells me that they have not got a leg to stand on as far as prosecution. she says go home, ignore it all......
life sends an angel.
today i get an official call to say case dropped.
and again gratitude arises in the most beautiful form.

Yes Nina it does seem like there are about 50 of us talking to each other. This planet is beginning to resemble a giant used car lot.

I saw a time lapse film once of the ground under a large California Valley Oak. I think it was one frame per day but the action of the gophers digging made the soil look like boiling gumbo.

Around this time of year the dry dust gets itchy and strips the lining out of my nose and I just can't wait for rain. Like the sage Nina could be all burned to ash above ground and waiting for that moisture to get down to her roots.

If the horse will let you put your forehead on that flat spot just between the eyes and trade breaths with it. A good cure for the "nobody-sees-me-as-i-ams."

Su is an inspiration.

So the other day I was breaking my television fast and watching a science fiction epic where the ultimate villains were corporatist types who had released a virus.

So, tube turned off I start meditating on the evils of corporatism. Then something happened. My, um, companion, guide, thingy that I call Small God speaks up for the first time in a very long while.

It says.."The immune system (Gaia) has recognized corporatism as a harmful virus/meme" We are working on an antibody. "You can see in your art that corporations are evil. That meme will lose cohesion."

FWIW that's my vision. I can see examples of it at work. I can also see the ashes of the advancing fire. There will be new life. We just don't know if humans get to be there with it. Are we the virus or the antibody?

Pangolin, so true, corporate Oligarchy is the virus, and it lives inside the TV as Nina points out...

Publius, please tell me that bit about bobdylan.com hyping $700 harmonicas is a cruel parody.... if not, it highlights Nina's post with a huge, encircling Sharpy that's visible from Alpha Centuri....

Just came back from a Chinese friend's father's funeral service.
Yes, they put a gold coin under his tongue.
The main man -- Taoist and you cant call him a priest -- reminded us about the three tenets of Taoism: "Compassion, Moderation, Humility." I have to say I've forgotten all of them in the rage about the machine and what's been going on but maybe this IS the reason I have been so unbalanced. Lots to think about tonight. In meditation, I do note my mind has been racing, not a good thing.

nina said...

Scrappy, thank you. I was just reading the comments on Useful Tools and realized the description I put out there for a mentor for Sage is you. Are you in a position to take on an eager beaver for a little while? I've got some of his work in the gallery. He has rare talent.
Just thought I'd ask. And thanks in advance for your consideration. I know these are hard times for everyone, but encouragement and passing on your knowledge to interested people, can make all the difference for upcoming generations. It also expands friendships and builds golden Karma. (I know you already know that.)

Love, nina

"the sage brush is the master stealer of water" -
here it is the blue gum tree, one of the few worthy australian imports. and yet our water wise experts have declared water on it - why - well because it drinks up to 300 liters of water a day.
ummmm well we can't let those trees laze around all day in the sun doing nothing but sucking up all the water so let us kill them.

and due to the arid nature of this landscape they were one of the few trees able to sustain themselves through drought and wind. besides their beauty, height they were masters at light refraction. these leaves are receptors of light. they house birds, create hummus, and more than that they don't sit with their bellies distended from drinking 200 liters of water a day, they breathe out - they moisturise the atmosphere.

mostly when i go on bike rides i become very much like a pachyderm. they always remember where the dead are buried and when travelling over that spot, know exactly where to unearth the bones. i don't need to search for the corpses of the blue gums, they lie like hills all over the earth. with more being killed every day. this way the wine farmers get more water for their grapes, which have become a mono culture and the poisons that they spray constantly. a real sulphate cocktail at this time of year.

today my most loved tree, one that i revered has had his bark ringed. now he dies a slow death.
walking up to him, sitting on the ground my back against his trunk, i do the only thing i know how - 'i say forgive me, i love you'......

su said...

yes scrappy,
nina is right, you are his mentor.
i will send you some shots of his creation. the last one being an eel trap.

the tools he uses right now are a drill, my kitchen knives (he denies this) hammer and chisel. my inclination is to rush out and buy him stuff on the list and then i think but he must want it and he must surely work towards it.
what sayest thou?

i think we started failing with our parenting when we started believing that children needed to get what they wanted in order to be happy.

nina said...

Oh, its a Euk! Of course. I did some looking, they are magnificent. The problem with old Eucalyptus in Western NA is development. If the branches are not groomed annually, they drop on people's roofs, patios, backyards, etc. They damage structures. So they are in the way, but nothing like the killing you are talking about. If you have tar and a brush, you can apply it over his wound.
Would that be illegal?
I think Pangolin can better tell you how to save this helpful artwork of Nature.
Its my hunch, they are targeting the oldest ones.
BTW,where are they getting these cruel ideas?

nina said...

Pangolin, about Chip, trading breaths is a perfect goal to strive for with him. Thanks. He's a skittish guy, I think he was hurt in the past, he spooks too easily, so we go slowly.

Athanasor reminds us of their extreme intelligence differentiating between the people they have contact with so there is a lot of promise that goal can be met.

My mother was injured by a horse while I was a child watching and that ended my biking over to the pasture and taking naps during which the horses would nudge me to wake up. I became a horse wuss. So Chip and I are the same. Step by step, breath by breath, we meet in tentative joy.

wanted to share today with you.

bugsy, iona's much loved rabbit suddenly is the solitary hok creature. the guineas have all moved back to the stick pile.
in winter his space was in the kitchen, by the fireplace. so there was always company in the lounge. there was always someone to feed him or converse with.
but now with summer he is alone in the hok during the day and iona is not spending that much time with him.

this morning i find that the cat flap had been left uncovered and bugsy had departed the lounge for the garden. a panic as i wondered if he would rabbit away. found him by the fennel, eating happily. i tried to pick him up to take him to the safety of the hok but he jumped out of my arms and sat on the ground looking at me.
in that moment i had to choose, to give him freedom, or to keep him safe even if that was confinement.
so i made his hok really comfy and cozy again and made it so if he needed safety he could run in there.
and then i handed it over.
next check i did on him he was under a vine, nibbling on twigs and dried leaves. something i would not have given him.
i picked fresh mint and placed it before him, he ignored it for the decaying matter.
this way he could obviously forage for what he needed.
satisfaction arose until i saw that india had surprised him and he was now heading to the gate on the road.
called the dogs, screamed for tao and thus started the marathon, down the main road, two dogs a teen and me spectatoring on the side.
the dogs managed to herd him back into the garden but then he hid.
okay so much for freedom and perfect nutrition i thought - safety its going to be if we ever find him again.
and then i went in to make some tea and he was in the kitchen, perfectly relaxed, saying i think i will stick around here for now.

this freedom thing...... it really does mean letting it all go.... only to find that maybe there is nowhere for anything to go to. it is all still here. what really matters can't be lost.

Self-censorship is a nice place to start. I don't think you should spend time counting to see the moods of yourself, rather get another cat. Yes, do that. Some solutions are so simple its easy to overlook them.
I know you'll know the right one when you meet it, so I won't go into listing no kill shelters in your area, but please send me its photo when you can. There are so many kinds of beautiful and loving cats who need a family and anyone of them could certainly make your own life more laid back.

Su, ,,neil.., I have this elderly Guinea Pig, he's 8. He feels sick, blah and sleepy left alone in my room even though I visit often and made him a wonderful habitat. But, when I bring him out to the main room with the dogs and humans, within a few minutes he's up and about like little "guinea pig pup", chowing down his dandilion greens. He likes the company. He doesn't pay any attention to the others around him, just grazes, barking doesn't freak him out, but there is a definite difference in his health in a social setting.

Manifesto:
The Mad Farmer Liberation Front
by Wendell Berry

Love the quick profit, the annual raise,
vacation with pay. Want more
of everything ready-made. Be afraid
to know your neighbors and to die.
And you will have a window in your head.
Not even your future will be a mystery
any more. Your mind will be punched in a card
and shut away in a little drawer.
When they want you to buy something
they will call you. When they want you
to die for profit they will let you know.

So, friends, every day do something
that won't compute. Love the Lord.
Love the world. Work for nothing.
Take all that you have and be poor.
Love someone who does not deserve it.
Denounce the government and embrace
the flag. Hope to live in that free
republic for which it stands.
Give your approval to all you cannot
understand. Praise ignorance, for what man
has not encountered he has not destroyed.

Ask the questions that have no answers.
Invest in the millenium. Plant sequoias.
Say that your main crop is the forest
that you did not plant,
that you will not live to harvest.
Say that the leaves are harvested
when they have rotted into the mold.
Call that profit. Prophesy such returns.

Put your faith in the two inches of humus
that will build under the trees
every thousand years.
Listen to carrion - put your ear
close, and hear the faint chattering
of the songs that are to come.
Expect the end of the world. Laugh.
Laughter is immeasurable. Be joyful
though you have considered all the facts.
So long as women do not go cheap
for power, please women more than men.
Ask yourself: Will this satisfy
a woman satisfied to bear a child?
Will this disturb the sleep
of a woman near to giving birth?

Go with your love to the fields.
Lie down in the shade. Rest your head
in her lap. Swear allegiance
to what is nighest your thoughts.
As soon as the generals and the politicos
can predict the motions of your mind,
lose it. Leave it as a sign
to mark the false trail, the way
you didn't go. Be like the fox
who makes more tracks than necessary,
some in the wrong direction.
Practice resurrection.

i did it. i shut it down and spent these past weeks sucking up all the real life i could. i hiked all over the cohuttas, painted, finished some home repairs and I watched the transition from summer to this beginning of fall. made a few critical trips, harvested food and enjoyed my own animals. your writing is as brilliant as ever and its a delight to read it once again. what can we do? we can live! we can love and we can use the path of art to heal ourselves.

i love chip - i miss my horse but i have too much hardware in my neck for that now. really happy to learn of him and am glad you are enjoying him. will we see a painting of him soon?

su, i choose freedom for my hens and the remaining four have gotten very hawk savvy. when i see a hawk hanging around, i use bottle rockets to inspire him to move on. works pretty well! still, the risk is great, but they wont tolerate confinement and i cant stand to see them pace the fencing for hours. at least their lives are full chicken lives, as are my dogs' lives and i can honestly say i have a least done right by my animals.
