It is shocking that some remain oblivious. It looks like they just don't know what to do so they ignore it and go on as if everything is always as it was and ever will be. You have to wonder, what do they say to each other behind closed doors? Especially the elements that rely on their representative selves to do the thinking and verbalizing. It must be cause for a great deal of confusion and miscommunication. An interesting line I heard recently goes something like this: I am not afraid of you or what you do, it is your secret thoughts that concern me.No doubt mind reading software is being tweaked and contracted as we read this.
In the New World its generally not helpful to make comparisons with the old world, besides, what was that old world, really? All the pillars supporting the new order were being sculpted. Masterfully brick by brick, program and mandate by program and mandate. Some knew it would eventually come to this, but as a rule, those who know are lobbied, tortured, ridiculed or deprived into knowing nothing or scandalized, so deep run the generational goals. Many events we thought were one thing turn out to be something else entirely, something far worse.
Does this sound like a world you want membership in? A world where nothing is as it seems or is stated to be? The change has not been as gradual as we are led to think. I can't speak for all of you, whatever signs you picked up that placed you into your current situations are unique. In my own life its usually been one door slams as another swings open - very stark, not a lot of room to ask why, this is because most of my changes have been geographical. Nature has been the most helpful that way. I have this rich interior life with Nature, but am usually a quiet, nearly closed person because most people are not interested in hearing someone else speak unless it somehow serves the illusion of their representative self. This is one of the worst features of our wonderful western society, the incessant me-ism, the absolute right of the individual to be heard and understood over all others needing to be heard and understood. Might I add this has not done us a lot of good. A common example of this particular attitude is the behavior illustrated by typical political pundit Chris Matthews, a highly paid TV news celebrity specializing in out-talking, shouting over, his guests. It is an intellectual affliction, perhaps a disorder and imitated in all levels of social intercourse in our western Capitalist corporately dictated world of haves and have nots. If you accidentally come across a blaring TV, you are a have not and likely a want not as well. If you seek this stuff out and salivate over every word, I don't know what you are, maybe a freak fan, maybe a jerk. And yet, these shows have heavy sponsorship. Someone is really out there purchasing the products emblazoned across your wide screen, thrilling to possession, feeding their representative selves who egg them on to greater and greater expenditures of liquidity they do not have, did not earn and now, never will. Even if something fantastical comes about where suddenly pennies flowed forth from the Heavens, no lessons would have been learned, everything that went down as it has for the last decade will simply repeat itself in an uglier, more pronounced fashion. What would they do? They will hoard. And the hoarding, in secret behind high fences, will quickly deteriorate into an out of control situation exacerbating an already dangerous, deadly ignorance of the moment. We could see this, we are rather close, edging into it in the advancing Apocalypse - but possibly saved by a series of horrors dished up nonstop. It would be sweet to have a tape recording of our thoughts from fifteen years ago to compare to how we think now. Mine would be so innocent, even though I've been around the block, what I labeled evil then is commonplace today. In fact, I labeled nothing evil, there was only bad or good. Now we have noxious and reprehensible, egregious and heinous, satanic, perverse, monstrous, reptilian and so forth. Another feature I find particularly abrasive is the make work program as opposed to the do what you were gifted/designed to do as a human being alive on Mother Earth, the Living Planet with her perfect system ... I see it as almost "unavoidable linkage", one required activity leading to another and another until you discover one unhappy day that your entire existence is consumed with either avoiding the BS or working around the BS - all the while pressing to carve a space in time to do only what your body and your heart ache to be doing. You cannot just paint, get a snack and keep painting. No, you set everything up to paint and the cell delivers one of its ringtones while you search for the keys to the vehicle needing fuel to carry you to a giant box supermarket where it is designed to remove all other thoughts other than those of unending consumption. These seemingly innocent activities lead to a greater and more comprehensive beehive of mindless busywork, as I am sure you already know. What happened to the painting? Oh, why, its lost under the receipts, under the lists of what to buy, where to go, what needs repair, where your attentions urgently mandate placement rather than just putting color on nice French watercolor papers. In the new world, you are no longer your own person. You do not own yourself or your body.
Today, you MAY own your thoughts, but we'll see how that looks next week or tomorrow, you never know exactly when because its all happening at breakneck speed. Things you forgot come screaming back at you - Oh yes, I'd forgotten about that one, heh, no stone unturned ... so many stones, egregious stones too. You should have known. Huge glaring similarities leading straight back to that multi-faceted root cause. You know the one, the root ball of the chain of Aspens that line the Snake River. Its all connected so said Scooter.... I don't know when I realized the dream was over
Well, there was no particular hour, no given day
You know, it didn't go down in flame
There was no final scene, no frozen frame
I just watched it slowly fade away...

I know people who teach yoga for free, or for donations. People pay others for the privilege of helping build straw bale and cob houses which the majority of the workshop participants will never have the opportunity to do. Volunteers line up to maintain old trains and wooden ships. Boat building is addictive as long as the builders are allowed to make pretty boats instead of the vast fleets of fiberglass muscle boats.
Healthy people enjoy working. We rebel against servitude. We enjoy true service to others. It seems to be a secret. Maybe it's kept a secret for a reason.
Resistance is NOT futile.
v'word: vashis, a rain of blessings?
So true, Pangolin.
For example, when I'm working on fixing an old turntable or amp for someone, I'll put in a lot of extra time if needed, and not even tell them or charge them for it. I enjoy the work, and am proud of the job...
whereas at my day job, I feel no such sense of ownership or responsibility. I'm a cog in the machine, and the purpose of the machine escapes me... not many cogs escape the machine before it breaks, do they?
Uh... hello? Anyone home?
I'm here Publius. I had to put down one of my two remaining pets on Monday so I'm still in mourning. The weeks preceding that event were filled with trying to save him which was impossible, yet I was in full denial mode. That's 2 animals in one month. Its too much.
I just need a little time, you understand?
It was you and Baz that got me out of the slump in the first place, wasn't it only yesterday? Sincere thanks.
Grief takes time, one month and then we move on.
Resistance is NOT futile. haha, make a great mantra — Om mane pudme Resistance is NOT futile ~ ah, just kiddin' — been laughing alot lately, and getting no work done — but you know, thinking can be work ... and doing, of course. Did I say laughing is good? Excercises the face & heart.
I hereby nominate Publius for best ever comment — Uh... hello? Anyone home? — Has a minimal full bodied application, maybe more!
I strive to reach such perfection ... on the keypad, alas still experimenting with unsuspecting masses (no catholic reference intended).
Nina — you!
Oh, Nina. My heart reaches out to yours. I am sorry you are experiencing such grief again.
Your post and your paintings are really beautiful and inspiring to me.
I, too, have only recently used the term "evil." I used to think that there is only good and "error." But, now I see the nature of evil as like a forest fire. Like Ran Prier says in his post today. You don't lay down in front of a forest fire. You don't petition it or vote against it. I guess you either escape or light a backfire. One needs to know what they are up against, in order to not be consumed by it.
I think that art is a force for good and can in some way combat evil.
Nina_ My deepest sympathies. I'm a year out from the loss of my beloved dog and I still get a tear when I see dogs of the same breed.
Baz_ Google translates "resistance is not futile" into HIndi as.....
Pratirōdha vyartha nahīṁ hai
They didn't have a Sanskrit translator. Mom's next door neighbor is a Sanskrit scholar. I'll ask him next time I see him.
The online Sanskrit Dictionary would suggest:
"virodhana kimapi na vyartha"
....but the sentence structure is probably wrong. Please refer to your local Tibetan Buddhist Monk.
Nina, I am sorry to hear about your loss. There is not much to say except those of us who have/had pets sympathize. We still miss our last cat a lot, he had such a unique personality...as do most pets (not sure about gerbils, iguanas, etc.)
Well, this was one of your best--and I say that often, it seems. I copied this line (and much else): "because most people are not interested in hearing someone else
speak unless it somehow serves the illusion of their representative self."
Wow, that is just great. "Avatar" indeed. Young people especially seem to feel their online avatar is more important (and more special) than their actual beings.... apparently 45% of the citizenry work on their Facebook page in bed.... that's a creepy sort of intimacy with one's representative self.
Thank you very much for the "advert" of my book--that means a lot to me, thank you. If you want another copy to pass around (or to re-level a sagging bookshelf), let me know.
v-word: Homiz, as in "straits of"? Or perhaps "The Dire Straits of Homiz"...
Nina, I also wish to offer my condolences and feel your sorrow at losing the small, furry components of our journey. It is never easy.
Love and selfless service to others is very clearly a key to enduring this process we are experiencing, and none are better it seems at living it than our 4-legged brothers and sisters.
We see ourselves as above them in the order of things, but they have so much to teach.
My love and continued appreciation to you all.
Z
I am very grateful for these compassionate posts. Thanks for understanding.

Our nearly 16 yr old kitty cant hold her food down any more. furr and bones.

Thank you RW. Can we ever prepare ourselves for the inevitable or is it better to suffer a shock? Either way, its hard.
So I talk to them about it, when I have the chance, sometimes we don't have that chance. Its the only way I've ever found to "prepare". I tell them all sorts of things about the wonderful world they will be going to, seeing the wonderful ones who no longer inhabit Earth, where Earthly difficulties and suffering do not exist. You must try this RW. There IS something to it.
Could not get your link to open, goes to Lala, but the page is blank. Please post it again. More thanks.
Charles, your post today on the healthcare reform mess is the best piece I've read on this situation. Seriously, your charts, your comments, your links, all awesome, all right on the money.
Thank you for your beautiful comments here and your continuing friendship.
Everyone, you will want to see Charles's essay today:
The High Water Mark of a Broken System: U.S. "Healthcare" (that's the permalink)
I absolutely agree with Charles's outline. Obviously solutions are available since other countries have implemented them. He mentions the Ivan Illich's book Limits to Medicine: Medical Nemesis, the Expropriation of Health which I consider a must read for anyone dealing with with the health care system or all of us. I would add to that The Great White Lie: How America's Hospitals Betray Our Trust and Endanger Our Lives by Walt Bogdanich.
Thanks for the pointer Nina.
Just watched Fanny & Alexander, the Bergman film. Over 2 nights. What an amazing movie. True art... some parts about mystery, layers of reality and existence... so true.
Talking to my mom tonight, I was amazed at how she spend some time talking about how much lower her electricity bill is now that my father has died. He used so much electricity with his computers and leaving lights on, etc., dontcha know.
True, sure. But somehow disheartening, that someone who has passed has left mainly a legacy of resource usage.
Perhaps she was just on a tangent, but there was something honest about her expression of disgust with her husband's resource usage (and not in a green way). She also is constantly telling me to disciple my son more... he can't just do whatever he wants ALL the time! He needs to learn how the world really works, etc. etc.
What bullshit.
The whole concept of peak oil and related stuff - oh boy. She's a beautiful because extreme example of why we are so up the creek in this country. She can say the words "peak oil," and she claims to know what I mean, but the concepts have no meaning to her reality... it's like she's all "representative self", to use Nina's phrase, and there is no there there.
But she's not unique. Everyone except a small minority really has no idea of a future other than BAU, and future growth.
I attended the Lutheran church today in my home town with my mom and son, in order to re-establish ties and see what's what up here in case we have to relocate. I learned the food shelf usage is way up. But something about the small town atmosphere was slightly encouraging: the harshness of the city was absent.
Well, at least we don't have to worry about health care anymore!
I deleted a comment left earlier than had some person stuff in it that I'm not quite keen on sharing yet, as I'm processing it still.
It's good to spend time with my son one-on-one (I can handle my mom's attempts at control by this point in my life).
That's it: control. Everyone wants control.
Even me, with my desire to master old-school electronics repair. I'll be the MacGiver (spelling?) of collapse and transition. Maybe that is my role: to help the remnant through transition by adapting and bringing back to life the useful detritus of 20th century civilization.
That's a fine role. A sacred role. You do it well.
Your Mom is still grieving, some people do that and need your understanding that just is how it is.
You see, as long as she can have a conflict, your father is still alive.
