Traveling Wilburys, from Inside Out
Having seen Avatar again recently, there is no question we, the Humans, have it all wrong. Well, that is IF we were designed to thrive within the same galaxy as Pandora and her allied planets. We may not have been elected for living in harmonious balance. We may be something else, a rogue planet, the balance the Universe requires, as if no particle is complete without an antagonist. Is good complete without evil? And vice versa? There are stories, such as Earth is the prison planet, or Earth is the feed lot for aliens. The truth is we have no way of knowing for certain with the exception of how we have performed historically as a species dwelling on this planet. We have performed exceptionally poorly, stupidly and foolishly. Can you imagine Pandora with her ability to call species from like-minded galactic bredren and sistren destroying herself from the inside out? Never! If however, there is nothing like Pandora in existence and the other planets are stuck in a me, mine rotation, we have before us the grandest opportunity ever to make a difference, an opportunity presently being blown up, blasted, fracked, radiated, microwaved, tasered, tortured, denied, whipped and generally debased as geographic slave congregations under the watchful technological eyes of the plantation overseers who happen to be far worse in carrying out punishments than their oblivious masters busy keeping their infinity pools overflowing. I fear the change we know could come about will not happen within our lifetimes and I doubt anyone reading here could become inured, although it is possible, albeit briefly, perhaps a few days at most. I know those few days are hard when it happens, but you bounce back, you know too much. you feel too much, you see everything and what you don't see, you soon will. You see when you are not trying to see.

| There is no beauty without ugliness, The Tao, v.2 watercolor on Arches '06 |
But on a rogue planet, the balance can change as easily as the heartbeat of life.Under heaven all can see beauty as beauty only because there is ugliness.
All can know good as good only because there is evil.
Therefore having and not having arise together.
Difficult and easy complement each other.
Long and short contrast each other:
High and low rest upon each other;
Voice and sound harmonize each other;
Front and back follow one another.
Therefore the sage goes about doing nothing, teaching no-talking.
The ten thousand things rise and fall without cease,
Creating, yet not.
Working, yet not taking credit.
Work is done, then forgotten.
Therefore it lasts forever.
Sometimes it makes us feel like the walking dead. Cats with nine lives who have multiplied the odds as they keep coming, back to back, each should have claimed us we say, yet we live to see more. And more again. Something we cannot define with science and logic is happening here, a grand design, some not-of-this-world intention we are simply not at the rightful stage of development to comprehend regardless of our effort. I believe this makes us a unique product of evolution to remain invincible in the face of pure unadulterated evil where vast and continuing material loss strips us to the lowest category of Earthly life and it has no influence at all, we go on in trust, always looking forward, accepting each test as triathlon athletes determined to pass and not just well, but intact, because in spite of the incessant repeats, it makes the good, the pure, the honest, the natural reverent and holy, gifts from somewhere else reminding us the world we desire really does exist and one day we are destined to reach it.

maybe we are to be kept on the precipe of doom as this is very profitable to some extremely rich oligarchs who also happen to be really horrible aswell,I suppose it will just get worse untill the people stand,if the people dont stand well, naomi klein wrote about this a few years ago, gated communitys extortion rackets and terrible murder rate everywhere, maybe with a few new extremely messed up crazy virus's chucked in so everybody has to go to hospital every month which no one can afford,...
I think the people will get up,a lot of people talking about revolution here in england,or removal of banks or any number of various different scenarios involving huge massive change,so huge massive change is coming,
nice post nina ,,,have some huge respects and love....neil
Thank you Sweetheart. Sometimes it looks like humankind is heading for a global Juarez. And sometimes, with the right mix of minds, we are already on Pandora.
That's called mood swings, a derogatory term meant to crazify the seeking soulful.

This is very good.
You seem to have the current set of reality's nailed perfectly.
Thank you for increased insight
Richard
Seems you recognize it Richie, so we share it.
Thank you.
I, too, despair of human beings. I feel the pain of the planet and our brothers and sisters - the two legged and the four legged, the fish, corals, trees, the Earth Herself. Then I remember that a human being wrote Avatar. Humans of many tribes did live in harmony with the Earth for many years. There was a golden age once, and it will come again in another form. The Hopis and the Hindus know it. Maybe all the bad stuff is surfacing and presenting itself in order to be healed. If so, it would be a big job.
At least that is what my mind tells me. But, then, I get stuck in my mind. If I lived more from the heart, I'd probably do better.
Exceptional post, Nina.
goddamn Nina...how did you nail it so well...we've never talked. You have a great gift.
So..It's because we see we suffer..then blind me.
Sorry for again again
This one was special.
it is when we go withing ourselves that we are in pandora

Nicely said, Nina, and so very true.
I'm going to second what su says here, because she just spoke my heart for me. Funny how that happens so often around here!

I love it when you incorporate the TAO in your posts. Here is something that ties into what you state in your most loving way at DIAW, Nina. We need to take action. This is a good start.
"A spirituality that is only private and self-absorbed, one devoid of an authentic political and social consciousness, does little to halt the suicidal juggernaut of history. On the other hand, an activism that is not purified by profound spiritual and psychological self-awareness and rooted in divine truth, wisdom, and compassion will only perpetuate the problem it is trying to solve, however righteous its intentions. When, however, the deepest and most grounded spiritual vision is married to a practical and pragmatic drive to transform all existing political, economic, and social institutions, a holy force - the power of wisdom and love in action - is born. This force I define as Sacred Activism."

Why spend our lives searching for purpose and meaning when we know in our hearts that the answer is ever elusive? We are here right now because of a process we will never understand.
When we give up the search for the unknowable and unquantifiable, we are released. It's the purest form of freedom.
Allow me to squeeze in here a sec, each of your amazing comments is pondered and deeply appreciated. As usual, I will address everyone individually later today. Crazy busy in a good way.

I think it was Aristotle that first put forth the idea that everything has an opposite, a universal dichotomy. Although that might be argued to not be universally true. What is the opposite of absolute zero. In everyday human affairs it does seem to be pretty applicable though.
Depression seems to come about when there is no hope or means for a change for the better. Easy to fall into that hole, especially in today's world. Not so sure I would subscribe to the idea that depression is only the result of seeing things as they are, reality, at least 100% of the time. There are some parts of reality that are uplifting and joyous. I would reckon that it is the ability to distinguish the difference between the dichotomies that is important. Orwell touched on this from a political perspective.
Great post Nina. Thanks
Pandora exists for me when I am away from all humans, and anything that reminds me of them. Except for the humans here. :) !!! :)
To spend time in a realm where goodness lives unmarred by human stupidity is my greatest pleasure. That is why I must be in the forest, the mountains, my garden. It is the only way for me to be sane enough to be able to go back out and interact with all the crazies.
I am behind what you're saying freeacre. And I concur, the heart is the best place to live from. Especially since I am sure yours is a beautiful one.
Love to all my beloved non-crazies.
Oh, and speaking of planets (well we were in the last post)... have you seen this amazing photo of Saturn?
Oh freeacre, that mind vs. heart is a hard one to break. It often feels like the representative-self bullying its way into the matter, attempting control, always wants to be the boss calling the shots with an arsenal of shoulds and musts.
I think its why so many people turn to drugs too. Escape from the overload of crashing fantasy.
Today I visited a friend who's shop burned down. She told me how the neighboring shopkeepers scolded her viciously for all the ugly burned merchandise out front ready for clean up. My friend broke into tears relating the incident saying "No one ever said they were sorry for our loss." We realized a few dacades back, all the other shopkeepers and neighbors would have been in there helping right the place. But not now.
In moments like that, how could there be any room for conflict between the heart and mind.
Ah, but the insurance company forbids me from helping with my labor inside the shop in case of lawsuits from smoke (all gone) inhalation and installed their cameras. Score one for the representative self.
Answer me this Burnie, would you rather not see?
I-neil, is it possible you could supply the link to that Naomi Klein piece? She's my favorite female writer among pro-journalists.
The article you mentioned rings a bell. If its the one I'm thinking of, everyone should see it.
Thank you.
Su, you reminded me of a metaphor I overlooked, a striking one too, that of the container the parapalegic traveler has to sleep inside in order to be out and about in Pandora as a Navi.
Please visit the gallery soon and see the legacy of your heart's words.
Thank you Murph, I am always grateful when you comment. (You are a perfect balance for FA.) I agree reality contains stellar moments of purity, love, connection, but generally look at the biggest picture possible which is basically something like a chart with high points and lows, noticing there are more lows over the past few centuries, increasing by decades, than highs and the highs appear to be not quite what they seemed originally as they fall apart. In other words, would you not agree there is no longer a balance, and the lows are weighting the scales?
Life, this: To spend time in a realm where goodness lives unmarred by human stupidity is my greatest pleasure. is wonderful, so Faulkner!
I agree completely.
Zee, someday, when you feel like it, I want the story of your youth so I know how it is you turned out so sweet? It is a constant curiosity of mine to understand why some are so callous and others so free to just be themselves.
I am serious. Thank you in advance.
Scrap, that goes right along with Henry James saying any occupation that does not involve us somehow with human interaction leads to ennui.
Further, what benefit is any insight, for example, without extending it through sharing?
Sacred Activism is the powerful force that eludes the common failures of what could have been, what could be and what is. Its easily undermined by infiltrators passing out false desire.

I love a man who admits to his temper tantrums.
Most insist on justifying them. Then it gets long and circuitous with all points lost.
The real issue is always threatened sexuality, but it is shocking how many refuse to recognize that and it will, in fact, infuriate them into more of the same tantrums.

Nina,
I agree completely that the low points are dominating the graph. I was only pointing out that reality is not a one way tunnel of either-or. IMO, trying to live oblivious to the low side, or immersed in the low side are not healthy for the individual at all. The former is denial and the latter leads to depression.
Human beings live in a sea of symbols, primarily of their own making. Being able to discern the symbols relationship to what is real is difficult enough to drive people into the denial stance. Alfred Korzybski did some work on this concept, ie discernment of symbols to reality, called non Aristotelian logic. Interesting perception on this problem. A.E.Van Vogt wrote a couple of novels containing this concept that I liked.
Neil, I'm okay. We didn't feel so much as a tremble here. But thank you dearest for your concern!
Thank you neil, take your time. It will come about when it comes about. If you are like me, inspiration cannot be forced.
Murph, about the high and low points graph, historically people use that in one on one relationships, there is supposed to be a balance and when that balance fails through low points exceeding high points, well, we don't need anyone to tell us, that's the end of the road. When that idea is enlarged to include the backbone of nations, patriotism and allegiances fail in the same way, in an ultra magnified fashion, that too is the end of the road. What you are saying about balance is realism at its finest. I think we and our friends are very much in tune with that.
It is natural, as in nature, that balance is the overarching force and we are born from nature. We are not even a metaphor, we are of it.
The books sound immersing, thanks.
Burness, the Faulkner quote you refer to came from Life in Creation.

She is not listening to you
By freeacre
The Earth, our Mother, does not monitor our prayers.
Her attention is not captured by our stories, lamentations,
crimes, boasts, desires or passions,
although She has innumerable ears.
She tastes the planet instead.
The land, the oceans, lakes, rivers, air, forests, fungi, plants and animals
combine to form a global banquet.
She savors the flavors and responds accordingly.
She knows we are once again
Entering the galactic center.
Energies are changing dramatically. The temperature,
The winds, the chemicals and deaths of fish and fauna,
Animals, birds, bugs – all the carbon-based lifeforms –
Form a dish that requires adaptation.
Not a problem for Her. She has responded to these changes
Many times in the past.
Inspired, like a chef who adds perfect ingredients
To create delicious, beautiful, imaginative, and satisfying
Combinations of life itself.
This is what She does.
This is what She has always done.
The cacophony of voices once again
Grows quiet.
No distractions to impede innovation
As the Master Chef once again
Creates a masterpiece
Worthy of its patrons
From the stars.
You are not alone neil. It is refreshing that you are so open with your feelings and free to express them here. I am honored. Thanks. All of us are under plenty of stress and there are times it must break out.

Nina, are you being affected by the Breckenridge Complex wildfire? Your " September 12, 2011 6:58:00 AM PDT " comment and the type of terrain and vegetation shown in some of your photos caused me to think that might be the case.
HSW
nina,
i was walking in the garden, checking on the eekers. a storm moving in - and suddenly in the midst you appeared in thought and essence.
a concern arose.
i hope misguided.
hoping you are safe.
hoping you are all safe.
i command the white light
and the violent flame of protection to be with us all in this moment.
That's the general area HSW, and the Breckenridge Complex Fire includes a most wondrous place called Walker Basin. There is a ancient family farmhouse there, I don't know them, but the plaque on the gates says something about the family adopted a beloved Native American orphan girl in the late 19th century, who grew up to be a pillar of the community. Its serious Gold Rush/stagecoach country as well. Thick, old growth forest and steep terrain running up the sides of the basin. 50 fires hit the region over the weekend from dry lightening last Saturday before dawn. I'm okay, but there have been plenty of tense moments. BTW, You've got a good eye and wonderful sense of geography.
All the fire agencies are on it with massive artillery, but Breckenridge is proving extremely difficult to contain. The most humbling, awesome things I've seen besides the fires are the DC10s and ST-2s under the Command plane. I've seen it before, but every season they improve. Those pilots are way past any remote control aerial ballet. They can turn on a dime.
FYI: Next best thing to having a scanner is this link: Wildlandfire.com
Su, more amazement! You've been through it in a far worse way. Those days of danger, as far as I can discern today are over for now, for us both, but the feelings, memories and visions come back with every new disaster. They make us stronger and more compassionate. Do you realize how fortunate we are? This is what I meant about "cats with nine lives" in the post.
Of course you realize it. How are the eekers? I think they are our angels.
Love you.
the eekers are eekingly beautiful.

sweet sweet life.
Nina, I'll check out the wildfire link you listed. Here is another site ( link below ) that is very useful for keeping up with fire info across the nation. Note in the top right corner you can look for any incident, in any state. On the top of the California incident line up currently is the Breckenridge Complex fire. I have a particular interest in this subject since I have a degree in fire suppression, and was a city and forestry firefighter.
http://www.inciweb.org/state/5/
Good to here you are safe so far. The Breckenridge Complex wildfire is the joining of three lightning started fires, the Spring, Cottonwood and Milano fires. Here is the link for this complex:
http://www.inciweb.org/incident/2667/
As of today they have started to show on the incident map the fire perimeter extent which you may find useful. Also you can move this map around and see the other lightning started fires in that general area.
My brother lives in northern california near the eastern extent of the Pit River arm of Lake Shasta. He has lived there since 2000. Last night he called me and said the most wild and intense lightning storm he has seen since being there was laying down extensive lightning, coming at them from the northeast, moving southwesterly. It was a broad front of lightning from roughly the Mt Shasta area down through Mt Lassen. It moved through pretty quickly with periods of intense but brief rainfall. He called me to get some current satelite info on this storm system. I tried to get a hold of him this morning to see if any lightning fires are starting up which could be a real good possiblility since it is sunny there today and some winds from the northwest will be moving into that area.
Some years ago a very unusual and intense thunderstorm system moved into northern california off the ocean, formed very suddenly at sea, and it started in its swath close to 1000 lightning fires. It eventually reached my brothers area and three lightning fires started on the north and east sides of my brother 2000 acre property. He works with big dozers and had one rented at the time at his disposal. He worked for six days straight with the local fire service, with little sleep during this perios to build fire lines and fight those fires. By the end of the fires only 30 acres of his land got burnt.
Climate change will be producing increasingly intense thunderstorms. More moisture in the atmosphere, worldwide rising average heat ramping up evaporation, will mean more fuel for erractic weather. Makes one wonder how an essentially bankrupt state like Californis will be able to continue to afford the huge resources needed to fight what will be more and more fires?
Beautiful area you live in Nina. I had already thought you might live in that region, and actually was thinking about you as I drove down the hill on HWY 58 from Tehachapi during my recent road trip to Burning Man :-) I looked off to the northside of the HWY thinking to myself, that looks like Nina country :-) My family and I will be passing by there again Oct 7, heading up to visit my brother and to visit our 20 acre property near him. We go up there usually once a year for a week.
Hopefully no lightning caused fires get started around there. The area around our property is very similiar to that seen in alot of your photos, various types of oak trees, grasses, assorted pines too. Would hate to see it all get burnt up but not letting it ever burn ( general fire policy in the last half century ) is not good either. Overgrown forest void of natural fires become unhealthy and ripe for catastrophic burns, which kills everything in large areas where these fires would have naturally been more mild and left intact vegetation to restart growth.
Maybe one could think of the increased intensity of lightning storms as Mother Natures way of rebalancing the system, responding to the alterations of our tinkering with it :-)

Nina, just for fun I'll take a guess as to what your new photo is showing. Its a view of the mountains on the west side of the Walker Basin, looking up through the canyon seen to the high ridge in the far middle background, that distant ridge being somewhat south of Breckenridge Mountain. There is what looks to be a road seen as lighter patches which I think may be Stagecoach Drive which runs through the lower hills, terminating at ( something white standing up near middle of your photo, visibly small in size )some sort of structure, a residence perhaps. Maybe your photo was take off of Caliente Bodfish Road or just off of it in the Walker Basin :-)
More big thunderstorms popping up this afternoon here in Apple Valley, CA. The satelite signal has been out for about a half hour and I think its becase of the storm interference. The San Bernardino Mountains are getting hit by lightning right now. Interesting weather lately :-)
HSW
anonymous I live in Redding, it was an incredible light show and intense as you say
Hello Burnie :-) This is anonymous, or actually HSW which I sign at the bottom :-) I did get in contact with my brother and he said so far no fires showing up in his area. Our properties are east of Redding and north of HWY 299, near the Sugar Pine Conversation Camp on Backbone Ridge. Its a beautiful area and my brother has found ample evidence during his time there of the long time past habitation of the indians in those mountains :-)
Burnie I don't know if you have ever checked out Potem Falls, which is on a road ( Fenders Ferry Rd ) that goes to the Pit River, cutting off to the left at a location just north of Round Mountain, a community found out east on HWY 299. The road goes five miles, paved at first then excellent paved dirt to a bridge over the Pit River, then you continue on the other side just less than a mile and these falls are in the little canyon on your left. Last time I was there it was marked on the road with a sign. Its a short zig zag hike down the hill to them. Its a magically beautiful place and will be well worth your efforts to get there :-)
Also, further up HWY 299 past Montgomery Creek then north on a smaller road to the little town of Big Bend there is Kosh and Hunt Hotsprings right on a little creek there. The town people in Big Bend can give you directions. Its about a mile out of town on the north side then 20 minutes down a dirt rd on your left to the creekbed. Its a wonderfull spot to soak your bones in the hot/warm ( pool temps vary ) waters and its very scenic too :-)
HSW
thank you HSW, I wiil head that way soon. I am always for beautiful places, this area seems to be full of them. I found a little place close to town that had a cupola and some cleared parking spots that had signs that said artisan, must have been a place where they have fairs in the recent past.
I sat there for quite some time, felt good, peaceful and quiet. Friday maybe i'll go explore again thank you.
Burnie
Burnie, here are some maps to get you oriented:
Potem Falls
Big Bend
When each page opens, put in the name of the place i.e.; Potem Falls, CA or Big Bend, CA.
They look like I gotta go there soon to meditate and revive. Nice tips Mister Wizzy.
Burnie, I miss typed the name Kosh, its Kosk. Here is a website with some discussion about these two hot springs which are within a 150 yards or so from each other and I'd say most likely they are from the same ultimate deep underground sources as Big Bend Hotsprings. They are situated on the bank ( same side of stream )of Kosk Creek.
There is lots of hot water gushing forth from the various sources at Big Bend Hotsprings, I think I read it was close to 2,500 GPM. It used to be open to the public with multiple hotpools but was sold into private hands a while back and I don't know if its open at this time. The Big Bend town folk can inform you as to its status. A friend of my brother and I named Mauro who's website is,
http://geoengineeringwatch.org/
was a caretaker at Big Bend Hotsprings for three years and one of his children was water birthed in one of its warm pools :-) He now lives at a really cool spot in Montgomery Springs off of HWY 299. He built his own dome dwellings, powers everything off of a hydro system, and does permaculture type gardening around his forested land :-)
Here is the Hunt/Kosk link:

Love the inciweb links! Muchas gracias.
They did another air show today. Rain missed the region. Sometimes, you know, the storms have a bad effect when the winds blow the wrong way forcing the fires to change direction into even faster fuels. A rain is GOOD, helpful, but it does not bring these superfires to full containment.
I have no idea how California can pay for these things other than what they already do which is bring in the Fed, with their resources involved. I saw the budgets for some of the agencies and it was to weep, they really are forced to follow a sort of heirarchy when they find themselves facing these widespread superfires. As we go further into climate chaos, the need for tech saavy aerial battalions only increases. They are very effective in every way necessary to get the job done. Seems to be the way of the future for all US wild lands. Don't think big multinationals are not already an important part of the industry.
HSW to Bernie post is up now.
Su, when I think of how little Nina's life started out, taken from her family, waiting for adoption as if caged was what life would always be, then loosing her soulmate Vlad, it is you and Iona's presence that has taken her so far into contentment. May blessings shower over you both.
And she is an exceptionally beautiful girl. She has many gifts. It is wonderful to know she is having her life with you, these angels are very spiritual. Lots of no talking, but you hear. Soul to Soul.
Late to the party again.
No secret, I am a lifelong depressive. I keep telling the psychs I don't want a pill that makes me align with reality; I already DO that. I want a pill that allows me to join the socially fashionable delusions. The nasty thing about drugs is that if you take the right(¿wrong?) ones you get very good at sorting delusion and reality once you're sober. I think that's why addicts chase ever-higher dosages.
My late brother spent a few summers working back-country fire crews to pay for college. He offered this wisdom. If you can see the fire command plane complete a circle pack. If the command plane is circling you: run!!. Be safe and be comforted that those burn zones are your fire lines for a few years.
Eventually we'll learn to cut fire-safe zones around our buildings and burn spring and fall "controlled" burns to knock down fuel loads.
I'm working lately on the Tao of bicycling and pruning manzanita. I take refuge in the heart of a bush, with a pair of clippers........the buddha not being immediately available.
Dearest Pangolin, a great comment.
What happened to your brother? I recall you told us a while back and it is strange I can't recall it. I'm getting a Davis Foster Wallace vibe and that can't be right.
... Eventually we'll learn to cut fire-safe zones around our buildings and burn spring and fall "controlled" burns to knock down fuel loads. ...
I have friends in wilderness areas already doing this (but never in fall, that's the worst season you know - I evacuated Simi Valley at the tail end of October 2003.) The problem is not enough others are doing it and if they did, they wouldn't know how to contain what they start. We need better educated communities, not just preparedness links on a firefighting website and not just clearance deadlines, but all of what you are saying, its the only way to go. As a start, I have committed myself to classes for certification in community emergency response. Your late brother's comment about the command plane is a wonderful mantra. Bike on my brother. So good for you and free too.
HSW, that sure does look like a nice little back road. How interesting! You think its actually a fire break? The whole image was taken at upwards of 7k ft. Maybe dozers made it a long time ago and keep it tidy in case they need it again. They do all sorts of prevention work in their downtime. Beside clearing "breaks" they do "on site" truck and aircraft mechanical repairs during the wildfires. (I saw that from their recruitment listings.)
HSW, I am saving the image for you that we were talking about since I have a new one to post.

In a nutshell, Tatooine has two sunsets, Egypt and Libya are in chaos, scheming Boehner is plotting the demise of entitlements under the curtain of his supercongress, Somalia is still starving, Greece is still wavering, Palin isn't worth mentioning, Palestine is being shoveled under the table, better to hang out at the beach Dubs and enjoy what little of the sea life survives.
Archdruid and the Trouts have great posts up.
When we are not building bunkers, we are taking recess online.
Now, what are you up to?
Hi SU
I have just been weeding the garden and trying to keep it from drying up. We have a serious drought around here. Still hot as hell too.
Nina, I'm guessing the " back road " you referenced in your
September 15, 2011 5:40:00 PM post is Stage Coach Drive, the road I suggested may be visible in that previous photo and the one you listed the link for. Looking at satelite info that road appears to be an access route to various private properties and their dwellings seen at various points. Stage Coach Drive does wind quite aways through those mountains from its southerly endpoint which may be in that photo you put up earlier. While it could clearly act as a fire break I don't think it was built as one orginally, considering the manner in which it crosses the terrain. It looks like a nice one to take a cruise on the Mountain Bike some fine spring day :-)
I see you have a new photo up. It looks smokey in the surrounding air. Perhaps all those fires in the hills east of Bakersfield mucking up the air quality. Looking at the Oaks and grasses it reminds me of another photo you posted some time back of a big rock in some oaks ( if I remember correctly ) and I think you called it Elephant Rock, a place you go at times to ponder, muse and meditate life.
There are remote places I hike to in Granite Mountains behind our home ( eastern Apple Valley, CA ) and one of the spots I named Helios ( the sun in greek ) because its a sheltered canyon area and on hot summer days it can be 100-110 there.
It is a spring area, as springs go in these desert mountains meaning there is a small amount of surface water above ground or just under the ground which provides for an oasis of green in the parched landscape. At that location ( Helios ) there is an old Red Willow and thick stands of Desert Olive and its very striking to look at that little spring from a distance because all the green looks so out of place :-)
Anyway I bring up the above because there is a spot above the spring where I sit in the shade of some rocks, and across the canyon up high there is a prominent rock outcrop that I call Elephant Rock as it looks like the gigantic head of one :-)
I have spent many days just sitting there for an hour or two, thinking on things, and its a place where you can really feel so far from the busy goings on and ills of the greater world. Its a simple place, the stark desert, multi-colored rocks, green oasis below me and Elephant Rock above looking wise and ancient :-)
Nearby is Hidden Valley ( surrounded on all sides by steep rocky mountains ) and the Crystal Oasis which is a rock garden I created out of lots of natural stones I've found in my travels. These are all special destinations along what I call the Coyote Trail, the path I follow to hike out there, and little clay heads and the circles I like to make are spread about in niches that inspire me along the way :-)
Actually the Coyotes have taken to my walking routes there, as evidenced by their foot markings and droppings, and this has been the case in other local mountains where I have explored good routes to the top of them. I kind of think of it as their endorsement of my path choice :-)
I also move across the landscape in a light fashion, leaving things as undisturbed as possible, as Coyotes really do in thier travels. I think of the dead plants as the bones of something once living and do not step on them either. Thankfully that area of desert is remote enough and is difficult terrain so it has always remaind unscathed by human foolishness, untarnished and pristine. Its very peaceful and relaxing to just walk in those lands, any time of year :-)
PS, There are various photos of these places at my Flickr site, just google hotspringswizard :-)

Another beautiful piece, as always, resonating so deeply for me. Thank you. What an amazingly sinc-ed up Love Tribe we have here and around the spiderwebs.
If at all possible, I recommend viewing the Living Bridge video. Definitely evocative of Pandora right here on our Mother. Its only 4 1/2 min., so worth downloading.
Also linked on your blog, via Nothing Is Final, is the article on Dam Destruction trend by people around the country fed up with the insanity.

HOW ENLIGHTENED ARE YOU?
IF....
If you can live without caffeine,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him or her,
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
If you can honestly say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color, religion, gender preference, or politics,
--Then you have almost reached the same level of spiritual development as your dog!

Scappyscrapkins, I loved that. Very funny. An indisputable truth.
Bho, the video, which I got quite a bit of interestingly, is beautiful, thank you.
As for the dams, we're seeing nothing like that, in fact, it is the opposite. Example: laying in miles of gas pipeline while three massive wildfires raged. Roads officially closed, but not closed to pipeline workers. Nobody objected.
My brief chat with the pipeline boss revealed his desire to hunt our wildlife, his primary concern being only with the legalities of killing.
I predict he'll be back when he thinks no one is paying attention.
HSW, can you please provide links to the map with Stage Coach Drive (sounds like Havilah) and also, a link to the specific folder on your site, I 'd love to see it. It thrills me that you leave your works of art in niches.

Nina, I have been referencing the satelite info at the bing.com site. I tried saving the address of a close up of what I was talking about but when I re-entered that address it just went back to the start of the map search.
But you can find it easily. Go to bing.com, then use the " maps " link. I entered Bakersfield as an easy starting point nearby the search area in question, then expand the map to full page from side to side by clicking the little arrow at the left side of map. Once you do that in the upper left top of map you will see a " Birds Eye " link which will turn the map to satelite view.
You know the area so pull the map over to the Walker Basin, then at the north end of it the basin part is pointy and just to the left of that up in the hills a ways you will see Stage Coach Drive's southern most extent. It winds northerly and then eventually easterly to that Caliente-Bodfish Road. It does not go as far north as that place Havila you mentioned, at least best I can tell.
Regarding the clay heads I make that I place out in little niches where I walk in the desert. I used to make alot of differant looking ones and would put them out there but even though this clay is fired and quite hard, the extremes of weather does take its toll over the years. Like rain will fall and the heads may get web since they will absorb moisture. Then alot of times after storms, freeze conditions ( in this area ) will follow and the water soaked heads will freeze and begin to crack.
I really like the differant shaped heads I had made so I brought all of them home back to my room so I could keep them in good condition. I looked at them all and their various features and decided on a " type " of form of head that I would make to put back in all the old niches.

I chose an ob-long roundish shape because it is sturdy, simple, and reminds me of the beautiful rounded stones I have found/collected out in a sand dune area ( next to Lake Mojave ) of incredibly fine white sand where all these myriad rocks are scattered around in various places. The stones were brought down the Colorado River from who knows how far up stream over eons, maybe even as far away as Colorado. These stones are further smoothed from the blowing fine sand.
Look at pic six on page three of my Flickr site:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hotspringswizard/page3/
And it shows part of the dune area were I collect those stones. That photo shows the white rippled sand, a Creosote Bush, Lake Mojave and in far horizen is Spirit Mountain :-)
Anyway, the little round heads with only the eyes, nose and mouth also remind me of simplicity, an important theme for my life. On the back I put a depiction of the main eight stars of Orion as eight triangular little impressions. The triangle shape of the holes has to do with Pyramids, huge stone expressions from people of another time, and I find them historically enigmatic/amazing as to why and how they came to be :-) So the Orion imprint is kind of my signature that I put on the back of all the heads, and why I call them all ORI :-)
You can go to this page ( #4 ) and see photo examples of these little round heads in niche spots. The one with the other rounded stones by it is on top of Turtle Mountains ( my name for it ). I hike up there once a week for excercise and the great view ( 1,700 foot elevation gain ). Also go to Page 6 and there is another head arrangement on top of what I call Raven Mountain, another desert mountain I hike often. Lots of Raven's soar around its peaks, hence the name :-) Next to that pic on the left is a photo of my pooch on top of Raven Mountain, and that page 6 head in the hollow with stones is just below Tema ( my pooch ) in a cliff face :-)
Funny thing is there are Pack Rats that live all over in these desert mountains and they collect sticks, and rocks too about the size of my little heads, and they have carted off a dozen or more. I imagine a head sitting in a Pack Rat family room, an art piece they appreciate, right next to their Big Screen TV's :-)

Nina those photos I mentioned about in my last post have moved a bit since I was adding more pics to my Flickr site this evening. They are now on pages 3,4,5, and 6. I'm gradually putting up my Burning Man 2011 photos so its moving the rest of the pics further down the line :-)

Found the map HSW and love your photos. The High Desert IS an exciting place, so much of California is. We have neighbors from Apple Valley, now I see why they keep going back.
By the way, is that a Morgan? Or a Cal twenty something? Lake Mojave appears shallow, how deep is it in the middle? What is the aquatic life there? Some of your photographs seem to contain the distant ridges of Nevada, those sharp blue mountains without much vegetation.
And I never knew those white fluffies are caterpillar nests.
Thank you for the tour.
Nina, Yes California has such a diversity of landscapes. I appreciate the desert but also thorougly enjoy all of the other types of envirmonments too :-) I did my weekly hike to the top of Turtle Mountain yesterday and it is 4992 ft in elevation ( our home is at 3,000 ft ). Its just behind our home a ways in Granite Mountains. The highest point in that set of mountains is about a mile south of Turtle ( my name for it ) at 5,134 and its called Feldspar Peak.
Its a great view up there of the surrounding desert and on clear days you can really see for incredible distances. Like for example I can see the Tehachapi's, the Southern Sierra's around Inyo Kern, almost out as far east as the Joshua Tree National Park, the San Bernardin and Angeles mountains, things like that :-) Yesterday I could see big thunderstorms that were occuring from the Southern Sierra's northward.
We have two sailboats, the little one being a 15 foot West Wight Potter, and the larger one is a 25 foot Mc Gregor. They are easy to haul and operate. Lake Mojave is a great place to go sailing even though as we have seen through the years not many people sail there. Its predominately motor boats you see.
That lake is bordered on its west by Nevada, and the opposite shore is Arizona. Its a long and relatively thin lake ( wider in some places ), and I'd guess its not really that deep since Davis Dam down near Laughlin Nevada is not really that high, Maybe 70-90 feet aprox. We have sailed it from one end to the other :-)
Regarding aquatic life, I have done alot of spearfishing in the waters along its shores over the years and there is a variety of fish like Bass, Stripper, Carp, even trout in places. There are fresh water turtles ( very fast ), fresh water clams, and even Beavers that build mud and stick mounds on the shoreline where they live. One day while spearfishing I suddenly saw this big thing coasting by me maybe 4 feet from head to tail with eyes shining from the sun above and I suddenly realized it was a Beaver.
There are also lots of types of birds that live along the shoreline and I've seen on numerous occasion Great Horned Owls roosting in trees above me as I floated in the water which surrounding the trees. When the lake is up the trees near the shore are in the water and the fish I hunt congregate around them :-)
Regarding those cotton like nest, when there are good rains around here those catipillar nest are around here in the mountains and desert by the zillions :-) Some years we get huge migrations of Painted Lady Butterflies, so many that your car gets all yellow splatterd while driving, and it may be that these nest are the catipillars from them. You can see in the nest all of the black catapillars moving about. I'm sure they provide various desert animals and birds lots of food :-)
So Nina, in your latest pic do you know what type of animals travel that trail, Coyotes maybe?

Also Nina, I really love that painting titled " Reincarnations " :-) The black pooch on the left looks like our Miniature Pincher named Piper, one of my hiking buddies :-)

HSW, when you right click view image, the title of the work is decipherable in the browser among the html symbols.
That photo's title is the answer to your question about which animals make the paths: Elk, Boar, Deer, Rabbits, Mountain Lion, Bobcat, Skunk, Wild Horses, Coyote, coveys of Quail and probably more including the occasional runaway dogs traveling in pairs and packs. After looking at your photos, I'm sure you have the same variety coming through.
Indeed, the pup on the left in Reincarnations is a Minipin. Sweet and bossy little guys, aren't they? I love them all. Piper is a real charmer. Do get him a rattlesnake shot this year. I hear you can get him inoculated at rural vets on weekends for $17.
bho, I am not aware yet of anything happening simultaneous to the test, but a friend and his buddies who were camping for three weeks raced home after being there only one, which coincides with the date.
It a very smart thing to keep track of those exercises and move on quickly. They give me the heebeejeebees.
